  2. https://the72.co.uk/2024/05/08/leicester-city-gabriel-pereira-transfer/ Leicester City have made a deal for Gil Vicente centre-back Gabriel Pereira a priority, according to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb. An important summer awaits those at the King Power Stadium. The desire will be to strengthen where possible but with PSR problems rumbling on, costs will have to be kept down and key assets will be sold. Now though, rumours of a key summer target have emerged in reports from overseas. Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb states that Leicester City have made centre-back Gabriel Pereira of Portuguese side Gil Vicente a priority transfer target. The Foxes aren’t the only ones keen though. While Serie A side Udinese are admirers, Portuguese teams Benfica and Braga are also keen alongside Lyon of France. More on Pereira… Pereira is a 24-year-old Brazilian centre-back who can also operate as a defensive midfielder if needs be. He started out his career in his native Brazil before first moving to Portuguese side Vilafranquense on loan. They signed him permanently and half-a-season later, top-flight side Gil Vicente snapped him up. There, Pereira has become an influential player and a mainstay in the starting XI. A move to Leicester City would make for a new challenge for Pereira. A move to the Premier League would cap off a steep rise to the top too, having only stepped up to the top flight of Portuguese football less than 18 months ago. Leicester City’s centre-back options It seems likely that Leicester City will be in the market for another centre-back this summer. Jannik Vestergaard’s contract is expiring and it remains to be seen if he’ll pen new terms. Callum Doyle – although mainly played at left-back – is returning to Manchester City. That leaves Wout Faes, Conor Coady and Harry Souttar, and the latter two have barely been used by Maresca this season. As a result, it feels unlikely that they’ll become regulars upon a step to a higher level, potentially opening the door for a new signing like Pereira to come in and take a spot in the side.
  3. https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/enzo-maresca-keeps-alves-close-9272361 Enzo Maresca keeps Will Alves close as important Leicester City decision beckons The teenage attacking midfielder joined the club on their champions getaway to Monte Carlo despite not making a first-team appearance during the Championship campaign ByJordan Blackwell 17:49, 8 MAY 2024 On the same night Leicester City sealed promotion to the Premier League, their under-21s earned perhaps their best win of the season. Because attention was naturally focused on events at Loftus Road and how Leeds would fare at QPR, the development squad’s 3-1 success at West Ham was somewhat overlooked. But it was a very good way for them to wrap up their campaign. City were already confirmed to finish outside the top 16 and therefore miss out on the play-offs in the new Premier League 2 format, so there was little riding on the fixture. But against the Hammers, sitting second and having only lost three of their previous 19 games, City grabbed the victory. Take a closer look at the team sheets and maybe it’s understandable. City had Ben Nelson and Wanya Marcal in the side, the pair promoted to the first team this season, and they had Will Alves and Sammy Braybrooke in the team too. The latter pair, two of the club’s most promising talents, had been missing for the majority of the season as they recovered from ACL tears suffered the previous winter. Alves made a quicker recovery, but picked up muscle injuries here and there to stop him putting a run of games together. Braybrooke took longer to return, but was able to finish the campaign with a consistent run of games. In all, there were just three matches where both Alves and Braybrooke were on the pitch at the same time. The first was against Manchester City, and Leicester were drawing 1-1 when Alves went off at the interval. They eventually lost 3-1. Then there were the final two games, a 3-0 victory over Stoke before the win at West Ham. The duo were at the heart of those successes, particularly Alves. Against Stoke, he set up the first by weaving around defenders to get into the box and to the byline before cutting back to Oli Ewing. Then he made a run into the box to receive Silko Thomas’s pass and cross for Ewing to score again. Against West Ham, he did it all himself. Receiving the ball midway inside West Ham’s half, he carried the ball around one man, jinked inside another and then fired in from the edge of the box. It’s what Alves is all about: dribbling with speed and close control and then making it count in the final third. The next morning, he was celebrating with the first-team squad at Seagrave, and it wasn’t a one-off. Alves’s proximity to the senior team over the final week of the campaign suggests Enzo Maresca sees him as part of the group, even if he did not manage to get a game this term. Alves walked out with the squad to receive a medal against Blackburn, and then jetted off to Monte Carlo with the rest of the first-teamers for a short victory holiday courtesy of the chairman. It didn’t take long for Maresca to spot Alves’s talent. Back in October, when Alves first started training again, the manager had a knowing smile on his face as he said the teenager had “something special”. The question now is when he’s going to show it for a senior team, and for which team that will be. Alves’s lack of senior exposure so far means it’s unknown what his level is. Maresca clearly feels he has potential, but does he have the ability to make appearances as in the Premier League next season? It feels extremely unlikely that he’s going to be a prominent player in the top flight. Then the decision has to be whether his development is best served making the odd appearance here and there and learning directly from Maresca, or by spending a season out on loan and getting more senior game-time. It’s a tricky decision, made more difficult by not knowing quite where Alves is at. With very little first-team experience, it’s difficult to place his ability in a senior context. If City are going to loan him out, they don’t want to send him to a club where he’s not going to play every week, but equally they’ll want him to be challenged so that he progresses more quickly. City’s academy is doing great work right now. To have so many local lads contribute to their Championship title success, including the star of the team in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, should not be taken for granted. But the right decisions have to be taken along the way so that their talent can be nurtured. If City get those calls right, they can make Alves a star of the team too.
  4. New details of Fosse Park Marks and Spencer expansion plan revealed Work is expected to finish this autumn but the first part opens this week Fosse Park Marks and Spencer reveals more details on expansion plans (Image: Marks & Spencer) Retail giant Marks and Spencer has today revealed new details of its plans for the expansion of its Fosse Park store. The news comes after M&S revealed last week that it was "proposing" to close its Leicester city centre store. M&S's plan to expand its Fosse Park store was approved earlier this year by Blaby District Council. The plan had been objected to by Leicester City Council, which feared the expansion would damage trade in the city. The company said today that work was under way at the Enderby store, and was expected to finish this autumn, with one part already completed and due to open tomorrow (Thur). It added that the scheme was its biggest single investment in a store renewal to date. An M&S spokesperson said the transformation would include a bigger, market-style food hall, with an improved in-store bakery, dedicated flower shop, wine shop and cheese "barge", alongside Mai Sushi and hot chicken counters. Changes will also include a new, "spacious" clothing & home department, with dedicated Per Una, Autograph and Jaegar sections. The new womenswear section is due to launch tomorrow, Thursday, May 9, and will be shortly followed by the launch of a new beauty department in June, the retailer added. The store will also have a "new and improved" M&S café, with indoor and outdoor seating, which will have the company's viral Magic Coffee on its menu. The retailer said the investment in the Fosse Park store would see its footprint extended by 11,500 sq ft to just over 100,000 sq ft, which is an increase of just over the size of six, 10-pin bowling lanes lying side by side overall. The store will remain open throughout, with different departments transformed gradually, it added. Andy Frith, manager of the store at Fosse Park, said: “We want to deliver a brilliant shopping experience for our customers and the very best of M&S. This investment – M&S’ biggest single renewal investment to date – will mean we can create a brand defining store here in Leicestershire. The store team and I are incredibly excited about the transformation and we can’t wait to show customers the new womenswear department this week and all the changes we have planned between now and autumn!” Councillor Ben Taylor, Blaby District Council portfolio holder for planning, said: “It’s brilliant to see a brand such as M&S investing in the district. The expansion plans for the Fosse Park store were small in planning terms, relating mainly to external changes, but the commitment of M&S to developing such a flagship store demonstrates how Blaby district is a draw for major retailers and shoppers.”

We seem to have a decent team now judging from Fatawu, Hermamsen and Mavididi We have to get back to realising we're not a top 6 team or at least we can't use their spending as a yardstick for our spends we have to compete with them by being clever and not just throwing money around on fees and wages.

  13. Old London Photos · Join Sean Byrne · Outside loo or inside loo? When Herbrand Street Dwellings were constructed in 1901, the London County Council made the decision to give each household their own toilet, which must have been very welcome. Given the limited floorspace, the innovative way of achieving this was to put them all on the outside of the building, with access via a tiny balcony. The designs for the Herbrand Street Dwellings were approved in October 1901. The Coram Buildings can be seen in this photograph, which formed part of the development on the Herbrand Street site. For the development, the London County Council (LCC) had purchased the land from the Duke of Bedford, Herbrand Arthur Russell, whom after which the street was named. The balconettes, seen here, give the façade of the buildings a uniqueness. The balcony features square railings, with two doors either side. To get to their toilet, a resident would have to walk through a door in their scullery (kitchen), stepping out into the open-air balcony and walking through another door into their toilet. This was so that the toilet was closed off to the rest of the small flat. The plans for the buildings are very detailed. They include elements such as picture rails, food cupboards and the design of pipes. The LCC also designed a wash house so that residents could clean their clothes, as well as external sheds for bicycles and perambulators (commonly known as prams). Although the buildings still exist, the balconettes have been blocked in. Image Copyright: London Metropolitan Archives (City of London Corporation)

  15. Why do Media Companies insist on hosting tours of interesting Countries and places with 'Celebrities' often with relatives. Surely if the Country etc are visiting is interesting they don't need to pay these people what is almost certainly more £s This is especially true of the BBC a public/licence funded company. Give these roles to newcomers trying to get a foothold into the media business. In fact every time someone at the BBC like Lineker gets 'big' send them off to ITV or some other advert funded business.

After the celebrations come the holidays, but in a few weeks’ time, Enzo Maresca and the club will begin to prepare for the transfer window. Shortly after, the fixtures will be released and the squad will return for pre-season training. Thoughts then turn to how City can keep themselves in the Premier League. Maresca has already outlined that survival is the aim, with the club not in a position to think beyond that. That’s not only because of the points deduction they may start with, but also because of the leap in quality between the divisions. This season, the three promoted clubs are on course to come straight back down. If not for Nottingham Forest’s points deduction, Luton and Burnley would be mathematically relegated by now, alongside Sheffield United. But Winks is confident. Not only do they have an abundance of top-flight experience within the squad, but the FA Cup run, in which they faced two Premier League sides, gives the midfielder belief that City have the quality to hold their own too. “We played Bournemouth and we won and we matched Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for a large period of the game,” Winks said. “So with the manager – we’ve got such an incredible manager – I believe next year we’ll hopefully be okay. “When you play in the Premier League, it’s a level apart. It’s a completely different physicality of football. You need to understand how the game works, and be intelligent and clever in games. “And we've got enough of that in the squad. We’ve got so many players of Premier League quality and with Premier League experience. So I like to think hopefully next year, we'll be okay. “It’s the epitome of football. It's where everyone wants to be. And I can't wait to go back there. And especially with Leicester, because it's a club that deserves to be in the Premier League.” Winks himself already has six seasons of Premier League football under his belt with Tottenham and he could have been playing there this year too had he waited longer into the summer to see the offers that might come his way. But City and Maresca’s keenness to sign him convinced him to drop down a division, and it’s made for the best campaign of his career. No City player featured more often in the Championship this season, Winks missing just one of the 46 matches, while both of his goals were late away-day winners at QPR and West Brom. Plus, he finishes the season with the first trophy of his career. He said: “It's been an incredible season. I've enjoyed my football. I've enjoyed playing for, in my opinion, a Premier League club that needed to get back. And I’ve been fighting every day to achieve something special with a great group of lads at a great club. And so it makes it a little bit more special. “The Championship is such an incredible league, it doesn't get the respect it deserves. You can see with Leeds and with Southampton being in the play-offs, two teams that would also have wanted to go up after going down last year. So it just shows how tough the league is. Anyone could beat anyone. “I didn't see it as a risk (dropping down) but as a stepping stone where I just wanted to enjoy my football and play for a great club and a great manager. And this year has been probably the best season of my career. “It's what every player wants in their life, to win a trophy and to win a medal. To be standing here as champions is something I'm really happy that I've achieved in my career.”

  18. https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/leicester-city-already-next-kiernan-9268127 Leicester City already have the next Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall lined up Leicester City's crop of young talent in the academy was in the spotlight on Monday and one player has been tipped for the first-team ByJosh HollandFootball Writer 13:45, 7 MAY 2024 Leicester City's academy has produced a number of talented players over the years and the current crop breaking through at Seagrave are on course to follow in the footsteps of those who have made it. In City's Championship title winning season, Enzo Maresca's squad consisted of five academy players (Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Hamza Choudhury, Kasey McAteer, Ben Nelson and Wanya Marcal) with Will Alves, Tawanda Maswanhise, Brandon Cover and Arjan Raikhy (who joined from Aston Villa) all either featuring or training with the first team. The abundance of serious level talent coming out of the football club is one of excitement and on Bank Holiday Monday, Leicester fans were treated to a glimpse of what the future may look like. The U16s lifted the Premier League Cup in front of thousands at the King Power Stadium against Manchester City. Jake Evans, who has spent portions of this season playing at U18s level, was the hero on the night with both goals in a thriller. After his penalty was cancelled out by Christian Dunbar-McDonald, Evans' stunning second in the extra-time crowned the young Foxes as champions. If City fans didn't know of Evans before, they certainly will be taking notice now. One man who knows more than many about the attacker is former Leicester academy coach Alistair Heath. Heath spent seven years at the football club between 2015 and 2021 before moving to Cambodia to take up a first-team head coach role. During his time in LE2, he worked as head coach of the Thailand International U17s-U23s head coach before spending just over a year coaching the academy players. "After Covid/during Covid, I joined the actual academy working with the U14s," he told LeicestershireLive. "The first group I worked with had Trey Nyoni in and the second, who I consider the best academy age group I’ve ever been with, have got Jake Evans. "He will make the first team. I keep in contact with him now and he is one to keep an eye on." Heath continued: “I would say he’s a very versatile player, he can play on the left and right. He has got strength, determination, good ball control and pace. He’s got a good eye for goal and he’s an all-round great attacking player. "His biggest strength is his mentality. I remember seeing him in the U13s and to be able to watch him when I was with the U14s was great. In some ways, he reminds me of a Wayne Rooney-type player. "He’s an all round player. When I was with the U14s, I knew he would go on to be involved with the U21s, etc. For him, as long as he keeps that mentality then there’s no reason why he can’t go all the way and be the new Dewsbury Hall." Dewsbury-Hall was a late bloomer to the Leicester first team but made a name for himself after back-to-back loan spells with Blackpool and Luton Town. This season, he was a key part in the club returning to the Premier League with him scoring 12 and assisting a further 15. While comparing Evans' potential pathway to the first-team to Dewsbury-Hall is difficult, Heath believes the teenager could go on to surpass previous academy graduates at the club. “If you are, in my opinion, not in and around the first team by 18 (training, pre-season, etc), it’s very difficult (to make it) because that’s how tough it is. If a U21 team hasn’t got a young age group, then something is wrong. "Jake has got a great chance. Now they’re back in the Premier League, it might be more difficult, he might have to go out on loan but I know he’s got the mindset to do that and do well. They’ve got real talent there. Whether it’s on the same level as Dewsbury-Hall or [Hamza] Choudhury, I think he can be better than those two."
