  2. Dave Halliday, whom you mention as Sunderland’s would-be record scorer in 1925, was City’s manager when I first became a fan in 1957. He got us promoted (my first Second Division championship) but left the following year to go back to Aberdeen, where he was a scout for us until he died in 1970.

  5. You know, they weren't really a big club. The Revie Years (1961-74) were their years of greatest success, but although they won the league and the FA Cup, they were runners up or beaten finalists many more times. From their Wikipedia entry, "In his 13 years in charge, Revie guided Leeds to two Football League First Division titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, one Football League Second Division title and one Charity Shield. He also guided them to three more FA Cup Finals, two more FA Cup Semi-finals, one more Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final and one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Semi-final, one European Cup Winners' Cup Final and one European Cup Semi-final. The team also finished second in the Football League First Division five times, third once and fourth twice. They were a nearly club, even during the Revie years.
  6. Robert Alleyne made his debut a couple of days before the 6-1 when he came on as a sub against West Ham at Upton Park on New Year's Day. I know that because I smashed by ankle the previous October, and the West Ham game was my first match after that: on crutches it was a hell of a struggle, and we were sh!te - we lost 4-1. Poor Alleyne looked like he was scared, and looked away every time City got the ball! As I hobbled away from Upton Park, I swore I'd never go and see City again. But then we won the 6-1 against Wednesday and I decided to give them a chance in the FA Cup third round against QPR at Loftus Road. On their plastic pitch, we lost 5-2. No fool like an old fool, as my son said as we came away from Plymouth on 12 April.
  7. According to Of Fossils and Foxes Malcolm Clarke is "Dubiously distinguished by having had the shortest-ever first-team career with City." The piece about Clarke goes on to say that he came on as a sub in the 89th minute against Leeds United, and was reliably reported not to have touched the ball during the remainder of play. The date was 18 September 1965.
  8. My apologies - I might have been misinformed. Dodgy stream, then!
  9. Came third ahead of Brighton on goal difference.

  11. Be funny if Leeds lose on Saturday and both playoff semis.
  12. Very pleased for Ipswich; just need to finish the job in style on Saturday (as we do!)
  13. We are on Sky: all of the matches are, apparently. I understand that the Stags Head in New Cavendish Street is the London Foxile pub - the landlord’s a fan. Maybe give them a call?

  15. Yes: he used to play professionally, and it shows
  16. Just seen that the Leeds Southampton game is on Sky on Saturday - apparently they’ve been live on Sky 32 times this season. I do so hope they lose in the playoffs.
  17. He just hated the noise and aggression, and probably what it did to me! After the Plymouth match, he said the best thing about the whole evening was the City fans - many of whom were not getting home until the early hours, but were still in reasonably good humour. We just had an hour’s drive back to East Devon!
  18. You’re a lucky dad. I took my son to a couple of games at the end of the 1982-83 promotion season and he hated it. Took him 41 years to go to his next match - we went to Plymouth a couple of weeks ago. He’s not planning which PL games we’ll get to!

  20. Don’t call me Shirley.
  21. Look again then. We could lose 10-0 to both Preston and Blackburn and still go up.

  23. His deputy is our very own Chris Powell.
  24. You mention that there were no points deduction following our administration in 2002/3. However, it’s also worth noting that if we had had ten points deducted, we’d still have been promoted as we finished the season 12 points ahead of Sheffield United in third.
