Being honest, if it does end up being Martin, then he’ll need to get off to a very hot start. A large section of this fanbase just despise his style of play. The only bit of hope to cling on to is Maresca’s season. Looking back, a few of his signings were idiotic in terms of the wages we paid, but from an alignment point of view, we made numerous signings that season that fitted perfectly with his style of play. If we can see similar alignment this summer, then I think building a squad that fits Martin’s philosophy is actually doable.

Whatever we think of his style of play, I’m actually going to throw a bit of positivity out there on Martin’s recruitment. Looking through his spells at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton, quite a few of his signings have been quite encouraging, and you can clearly see the thought process behind them in alignment with his philosophy. At MK Dons for example, Matt O’Reilly, Harry Darling and Scott Twine all came in under his leadership. He’s signed a few experienced players during his managerial spells, but in terms of quite a few of his younger signings, dare I say it, I’m quite impressed.

Very much looking forward to signing Gavin Bazunu on a 5 year deal.

You can go down the road of the nuances in style/system, but at the end of the day, the key principle is that this board clearly want a manager that will dominate possession. After experiencing Maresca, it’s no surprise imo that this board clearly love the likes of Russell Martin, you can add the Graham Potter obsession in the mix too. We saw under Maresca that it’s doable. Whatever we think of some of these players nowadays, specific signings like Hermansen, Winks, Mavididi and Fatawu were absolutely crucial for Maresca’s system. We have to go down the same road if Martin is appointed. But as I said in my post you quoted, you’re relying on pretty much a 10/10 transfer window to make it work.

I think Top being so in love with Maresca plays a huge part in his decision making, Maresca’s style got us promoted before, so how do we go back and try and replicate it, unfortunately Russell Martin becomes a realistic option in that conversation. But we all know how this will go if appointed, it’s just possession based football to another extreme. You’re then relying on pretty much a 10/10 transfer window to make it potentially work, with so many specific players that have technical qualities, you fail to get in the right ball-playing goalkeeper, defenders and midfielders, then the style will just collapse like a house of cards. Cardiff managed to get promoted last season by being possession dominant, but it begs the question, why on earth didn’t we just appoint Brian Barry-Murphy last summer.
