The space we give attackers

Akinbiyi24 have you ever had a thought that you didn't feel the urge to start a new thread about?

They had that one-on-one where Riveriere completely missed the ball, but that's the only decent chane I remember them getting. de Jong hit one that was going wide but Schmeichel saved anyway. Apart from that they were ridiculous 25/30 yarders

There's a difference between giving the opposition space outside the box, (which we did), and giving them opportunities inside the box, (which we rarely did)....Their long range shooting was fairly impotent and Kasper had to show far less than Krul did !

Still nip and tuck, but at least give the team credit for three successive clean sheets !!

Thought Chelsea got 3 against us, or was that all just a bad dream?

Lets face it, Newcastle had some guilt edge chances today. Any other prem side and they would have taken them. Im baffled by the amount of space the opposition sides are getting in and around our box. Its been happening a lot this season. If we give Southampton this amount of space im sorry i cannot see us winning.

Wow strong outlook on life mate.

I have some sympathy with the OP.

My opinion has pretty much always been that we have a clear weakness in the area between our midfield and our defence.

This has manifested itself in a number of ways. Firstly, there have been many games this season where our defence has been peppered with shots from around the edge of our own area. Despite all the criticism Wes Morgan has had this season ( let's face it, lots...), his diving blocks must have saved many goals. Unfortunately, he has made some glaring errors also, and has been punished most times he has.

Secondly, we've actually conceded a lot of goals, if I remember to oncoming opposition midfielders. Players that given space and time, will punish you. And they have done. Lampard, Bojan, Gerrard..just three amongst others.

Finally, our full backs have been left isolated way too often. None of them, IMO are particularly good defensively..but they have not been made to look good, on occasion, because they have had to soak up too much pressure themselves. They've been isolated and they've made errors. Players do. They're only human.

A part of the problem, for me, has been not playing a central midfield three, with one player charged with solely defensive work. Another problem has been Cambiasso IMO. Many times, he's been caught too far forward and has not had the legs to get back in time (apologies, but I have observed this many times).

I believe the crucial game is going to be Sunderland away. I would be surprised if this game doesn't become the proverbial 6 pointer. I don't want to get relegated on the back of a goal scored by an oncoming Seb Larsson or Jordi Gomez.

For me, the Sunderland game is one in which we will score (we are scoring for fun at present) but if THEY score, I fear it could be because they take control of the midfield area.

If we stay up this season, I still believe it's imperative to solidify our midfield. In my opinion, this is the area where we've actually been weakest this season.

Am i talking about chances? Its the space we are giving players. You wouldn't find a pulis side giving the opposition that amount of space.

You wouldn't find Pulis winning 5 out of 6 either.

I kind of see the OP's point as i've said the same thing in our last six games. West Ham, Swansea, , Burnley, West Brom all had chances. Yes i've said that a better team would have scored etc.

Counter that with the fact in pretty much every game there are always chances for both sides.

Why bother at this moment in time?

We've won five out of six and Pulis' West Brom are only six points ahead and could potentially still be drawn into the relegation battle.

Oh, and let's not forget we beat the Albion 3-2 away from home.

So we're supposed to go through every minute of every game without the opposition getting a single chance at goal?

That's the general opinion from some quarters
