Rincewind Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 The Real Junk Food Project Leicester This is a new project in Leicester opening at the old library on Belvoir Street. The idea is to recyle donations and food to the needy and get supermarkets not to throw food away much of it ending up on landfill sites. I picked up a leaflet yesterday and this is their Facebook page. It is there purely to help people (not political) Waste has been going on for years. They also want old crockery plates even curtains which they turn into table cloths. https://www.facebook.com/trjfpleics?fref=ts It opens on 30th May 12.30-15.30. I may take a look myself to see if I can volunteer in some way.
Rincewind Posted 26 May 2015 Author Posted 26 May 2015 Thought this was gonna your new gang like the PUFFS. No not really. Was going out a hour ago. This project is not just in Leicester. It was started by a chef who worked in Australia for a while. He is back in Leeds now. It is not a free food thing. People give what they can, volunteer skills or pay what they can. This is a short video about it.
MooseBreath Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Prefer my food fresh personally. I mean personally, I prefer my food fresh.
Strokes Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Trouble is, if the government or council help, it will inevitably look like they are supporting food banks and such. Which leads to a lot of criticism from the likes of those that support it. Its basically a honeytrap for Tories.
ADK Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 The vulnerable deserve better than being the playthings of the young liberal middle class.
Merging Cultures Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 A friend of mine did this in north London. It went well and she got quite a bit of money from donors etc. Then she got bored. It's a nice thing to do, but unless it is generating a decent return it never lasts.
Rincewind Posted 26 May 2015 Author Posted 26 May 2015 what kind of keyboard do you have?! What has that to do with it?
Rincewind Posted 26 May 2015 Author Posted 26 May 2015 Prefer my food fresh personally. I mean personally, I prefer my food fresh. Most people do and do have their food fresh but sometimes for some people it is not possible and if unmeeded food that is bound for the landfill sites when there are familes and children going hungry it is better not to put it to waste. It is not just about food. If you read into it you will see it is about reusing materials that can be of use to a community. People cannot just turn up and receive a meal. They will contribute something whether it be time,a little money or goods. I am not having a go at you Moose. You are entitled to your views but I know many good people will be involved because they feel it is the right thing to do. I'm sure you will have a change of heart if you were involved and see things from a different perspective. See you down there.
Jon the Hat Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Although I do take the piss on occasion Ken, this cooperative sort of arrangement to make use of otherwise waste food is great. Also disagree with Moose - if the middle class kids don't get involved in things like this many of them would have zero idea about the lives many live. Personally I am involved with a group called Enactus which runs projects similar to this.

She replied that she had a desk full of leaflets Typical of her to know these things are happening. She's had a rocky few years yet she still thinks about others. I'll look enactus up.
