I wasted last week watching England V Ireland and today I have wasted my life watching Albania V France. I had a bet on the latter with France to be victorious but sadly they have spent the whole time walking around like they are on a beach. It then got me thinking about how much a fan pays to watch an International Friendly, not just the ticket but the travel, food, drink, souvenirs etc.. I then thought maybe the players could put some effort in to it to give the people some entertainment for their money. I don't think players ever will and so I don't think they should even happen. A manager can't gauge anything about new players in these strolls either. Maybe I am missing something.

France, Poland, Portugal, Greece was boosted to 7/2 thought it looked a pretty safe bet - I did think if anyone was going to let me down it'd be France as it was a friendly, but even so I thought it was very safe, seems my suspicions were correct though. I personally don't see the point in friendlies, in season, out of season I simply don't see the point. I know it 'gets them together' but they're pretty ****ing pointless as they offer nothing and like you say you can't really gauge much from them, and another point in friendlies surely it's an opportunity to experiment, try a few different things, test a few new players...nah, pretty standard, same old England team last week.

People's expectations of friendlies is way to high they're just a mix of fitness training, acclimatisation and familiarisation of team members all whilst trying to avoid injuries therefore a recipe for mediocrity.

I realised a long time ago, i'm just reiterating my points and irritations of friendlies. I always watch England games but only because they're on, but can't say I care about the national team. I jump on the bandwagon come a tournament but the rest of time international friendlies/breaks (Even for qualifiers - which I understand we need in order for me to jump on the bandwagon come tournaments) are more a hinderance than anything, i'd rather we just go on with our domestic games bloody hate international break. And i'd have switched off after 20 minutes last week if it wasn't for the possibility of Vardy coming on (Which eventually he did - but thats exactly my point, it was a ****ing friendly try something different, try different players, different tactics - I'm not taking about Vardy necceserily, try Austin FFS, just try different things...ah no just go with Rooney and the usual set up - we're still not sure what they can do are we...).

They could be played in between the Euros and the World Cup Mabe played over the year replacing friendlies with points awarded and a cup or trophy for the winner. It would at least give the players a reason to give more effort. But probably a friendly with Brazil for England is more attractive than one against NI.
Jordan Posted 13 June 2015 Posted 13 June 2015 UEFA Nations League, if it goes on as planned will change the format of friendlies substantially and will probably kill any chances of a Home Nations tournament rebirth. France friendlies must be awful because they have nothing to play for now. Friendlies can often be crap, but sometimes it's nice to relax and watch a game without having to get too emotionally invested in its outcome.

I know France should probably be beating Albania with almost any team they can put out, but you contradict yourself over your two posts. You moan that England don't experiment in friendlies and then when France do and they don't get the result you expect, you moan too. Either you think teams should use them to try out new player, formations etc, or you think they should go all out to win them, can't have both.

As you have said with all due respect to Albania a weakened France team should beat them, but I don't think i've moaned about them experimenting anywhere? I may have moaned/accused them of not trying or being too bothered due to it being a friendly.
