Who next for the England Rugby job?

Recommended Posts

Gats is contracted to 2019 after which he wants to go back to New Zealand. I imagine the plan is to build his profile up there for a few years at Waikato when Rennie moves on and to try and get the ABs job.

Edwards is English.

Jake White looks the most likely non English choice atm. Ford ruling himself out.

I know Gats is under contract. I don't think it will prevent the RFU going after him with a wedge of cash....

Going for a foreign coach is one thing, but to chase another home nations coach is another thing altogether......

Plus he'll want a project he can sink his teeth into.... Not so sure he'd have enough time for that....

Yesterday I'm assuming, I read it this morning.

Said in no uncertain terms he's taking a year out.

Ok. Thank you, I hadn't seen that. That's a shame I thought he might be a good choice.

I really don't see Gatland taking it, he seems committed to Wales and why not. England had their chance but prevaricated by keeping Ashton on after the France World Cup. I've been big fan of his since his remarkable success at Wasps and was sorry that Wales got him first. The rest is history, England haven't had a coach of genuine international since imo.

Not sure if you're trying to wind me up or being serious. In rugby, most people honour their contracts. It's not likely that someone would leave a tier one nation to manage England. Eddie Jones might possibly be tempted from Japan but it'd be odd timing.

Gats will stay in Wales til 2019 short of some huge bust up and sacking.

Besides, not being funny, but who'd leave Wales for England?!

Tony Pulis surely?

Really can't see a Welshman taking an English rugby appointment. Though watching 15 men defending their own 22 for 75 minutes and trying to get a penalty late on would be interesting.

Tony Pulis, bringing the clean sheet to rugby

Was sacked for reaching the quarters of the 2011 world cup...

I reckon it'll be @@Col city fan

I did apply but wasn't shortlisted.

I think my use of the phrase 'Let's be honest, Rubgy is a very shit game' in the application form possibly went against me?

Wonder if Clive Woodward will get a call...

No chance.

They fear him for some reason. Didn't they snub him in the review team?

Dean Richards to Coach England.

If it has to be a foreigner Pat Howard will do.  :D

Bring in Les Cusworth from Argentina to be the Director of Rugby.

Deano is an awful coach. He got found out as soon as he left Leicester (some tigers fans would even say before.)

Tigers had such a phenomenal squad during his tenure that ScouseFox could have won the Heineken Cup.

Genuinely not a wind up.

I drive a lot recently and listen to 5 live and and talksport and whilst recognising speculation, punditry and rubbish radio stations for what they are, there's been lots of talk about the RFU offering silly money for Gats.

I suppose the fact of the matter is that all the quality coaches with international proven track records are in work.

So it'll be about the RFU and a few million quid in wages and compensation.

When considering it from that perspective - Gats is no difference to anybody else that the RFU have on their shortlist...

And arguably, there's not that much of a divide between the pool of quality and the teams but yeah I'd rather live in the Welsh countryside than London.

I don't mean Wales as a place versus England as a place, just the Welsh job Gatland has currently versus the project that needs undertaking with England. England needs rebuilding, it needs someone to commit to it and Gatland already has one eye on going home to New Zealand.

He's a 100/1 long shot, as is Schmidt, Hansen, Henry and all the other big names linked in the tabloids.

Talksport and the papers are full of this shit because they don't really invest in rugby journalism and they only get public interest if they splash up a story about some guy the public has heard of. Joe Bloggs in the street who only watches the six nations and world cup doesn't have a clue who Mallinder is, it doesn't sell.

Believe me when I say it is wildly unlikely that England will even ATTEMPT to poach a coach from another tier one nation, let alone be successful. It just doesn't really happen like that in rugby. Not because I think England aren't a draw but because people in rugby generally stick out their contracts.

They'll either go foreign and recruit White, who has said he wants it, a la Ranieri or they'll go local and give it to Jim M.

Or, they'll go stupid again and give it to some nobody that you haven't heard of.
