King Power Stadium welcomed footballing professionals from across Europe on Wednesday, including England manager Roy Hodgson, for Tactical Insights Conference 2016.

Analysts, coaches and scouts gathered for a day of collective learning headed up by experts from the English, German, Dutch and Swedish Football Associations, as well as the members of Leicester City’s Analysis team.

Hodgson was one of two national team managers alongside Sweden Coach Erik Hamrén, while Dutch FA Scout and Tactical Analyst Edward Metgod and German FA Head of Coach Education Bernd Stöber also shared their tactical knowledge of the game.

Organised by Club analysts Pete Clark and Andy Blake, tactics covered included adhering to defensive formations, creating goalscoring opportunities, taking control of possession, developing positional sense of players and a case study of an England match debrief delivered by the Three Lions manager himself.

Speaking exclusively to Foxes Player HD, Roy Hodgson said: “It’s a conference which strikes a note with people because it’s interesting to see the build-up of these video scouts, who spend a lot of time sifting through, clipping and analysing matches.
“It allows the coaches to put forward their ideas in a slightly better way to the players. We always look to get the best out of our players.

“As we’re so limited with training times and there are so many things that get in the way, having the opportunity to use video to promote that message, or in our case quite often to get the message home a little bit more, can also be looked at.

“By using the clips put together, we can show players the good and bad examples of what is happening in matches. It’s something that will get bigger and stronger.

“If I go back to the time when I came back to England from Italy in 1997, I don’t remember anything like this. No teams even had a physical conditioning trainer in the Premier League in those days.

“Nowadays the staffing at clubs gets bigger and bigger because everyone realises that we can’t afford to leave a stone unturned in any area of football. As we’ve seen, the video side of things is growing beyond all measure.”

Sky Sports presenter Ed Chamberlin hosted the conference and explained how advances in technology have helped footballing professionals push the boundaries in what they can do to prepare for matches.
Ed said: “It was interesting when Claudio Ranieri was talking, when he first started he had a video cassette recorder and that’s all he had. There wasn’t much to work on in terms of highlights.

“The message that has come across is the opportunities for coaches now and the detail they can go into with the players is a totally different ball game.”

Ed knows the analytical side of football well given the extensive breakdowns himself and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher provide on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, alongside some well-known football pundits.

He continued: “For me, doing my job, today has been absolutely fascinating, not just listening to Roy Hodgson, but listening to the German and Dutch perspectives, and to have the Sweden national coach here as well is pretty special.

“I’m going to have to tell Jamie Carragher and the team about all this technology! I love the way we’ve been able to project onto a huge screen for everybody to see – it’s really clever.

“We like to be innovative and ground-breaking on Monday Night Football, which is everything that we’ve seen here. I’ll take away plenty of information, that’s for sure.”
Leicester City Tactical Analyst Adam Sadler and Lead Youth Development Coach Inigo Idiakez also contributed, as Adam discussed preparation and analysis of a Premier League game, while Inigo provided a Spanish approach to developing players’ positional game.

Head of Sports Science and Performance Analysis Paul Balsom added: “The idea for the conference was thought up six months ago and was primarily for performance analysts, but also for coaches, to gain tactical insights in a form that is innovative.

“What has been interesting is how the coaches and analysts currently work together, and hopefully a conference like this can develop new ideas.”

That is what he thinks is really clever about all of this?

Wait until he sees one of these:
