Captain... Posted 5 March 2016 Posted 5 March 2016 I don't know why this popped into my head, but it was only 5 years ago 2 very established broadcasters were sacked for making derogatory comments about female referee Sian Massey. There are still a lot of dinosaurs in and around the game.
MC Prussian Posted 5 March 2016 Posted 5 March 2016 They also fed humans to lions for fun .... And Christian preachers practiced Indulgence way into the Middle Ages. But what does that have to do with the main topic here?
Rincewind Posted 5 March 2016 Posted 5 March 2016 They also fed humans to lions for fun .... Only if the humans lost.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 5 March 2016 Posted 5 March 2016 What? They should forget all the fears and judgements of hundreds of millions of people because there's a bit of money to be made? It's shit like this that contributes to the issue. You really think so? I reckon the assumption that every gay player will inevitably be somehow ashamed of their sexuality is probably more damaging. All i was saying is sooner or later there will be someone who cares more about being seen to be the one who broke the watershed whilst simultaneously making a bucket load of cash than a few chants from the terraces. Any overt displays of homophobia would be quickly stamped out anyway just like racist chants are in the main so i doubt very much that they have 'hundreds of millions' of judgmental bigots to worry about.

But you're monetising people's sexuality, which is quite frankly ridiculous. Believe me, it's damned hard to come out, even in a normal context. My parents were very accepting (my aunt is married to a woman and my dad was best man, for crying out loud) but it still took me about 5 years to tell them - 2 of which I was dating my partner for. These players have to come out in their personal lives which is tough enough, so coming out publically when every single week you're under scrutiny from thousands of fans and the media would be unthinkably difficult for a lot of people. What you seem to be implying is that the fact that there's a bit of money on the end of it as an incentive should make them forget all the emotional struggles associated with coming out which, quite frankly, is insensitive.

I don't think I'm the one who has monetised sexuality. It's been prevalent in popular culture for years and that being the case it is inevitable that someone will cash in on it at some point. Most likely the person who does will be someone who has already come out to all of the people that matter in their lives and they'll just think why not go public, become an icon and get rich. I've already said this wont appeal to everyone and plenty will want to keep their private lives private, but I just feel that sooner or later there will be someone with different priorities. Imagine if Louis Spence was a world class football talent for instance. I'm not saying it's all about the money either, I'm sure to some people the opportunity to go down in history will be just as appealing.

So just to summarise, you think a footballer needs to come to to get rich? poor lads can barely feed their families.
