Football in the seventies

Came across this video on You Tube regarding the 1975-76 season. There are only a couple of clips involving Leicester (Bob Lee - remember him - scoring on a couple of occasions) and we see Shilton playing for Stoke. Great era, in my opinion, with plenty of excitement and an emphasis on forward play.  I think the players were as technically gifted as those of today. Obviously, they were less fit. There was a better rapport with the fans, with many players having come through the ranks and playing for their home team. There wasn't such a huge gap between teams that we see now, and the good players were spread between the teams. Enjoy!

Great commentators as well - Hugh Johns (Star Soccer - 'one nothing Leicester'), Brian Moore ('across the face of the goal'), Gerald Sinstadt ('ooh I say') - much better than the ones we have today in my opinion.

Hugh Johns was shite. I'll always remember him commentating during a world cup "Kaaaarll Heinzzzzzz Rrrrrruminiggerrrrrrr" lol

Me old man always goes on about how the seventies was great, he would go on the train for away games and gave a right time of it or so he says. To me it seems an absolute poverty time to be around. Every fvcker was on strike, fuel and electricity shortages, brown walls, Yorkshire ripper, shite food, rampant racism, threat of nuclear annihilation, northern soul, Watergate. Everything was a mess.

I wouldn't argue with you , except about Northern Soul.

The TV money in the Premiership means that some of the less fashionable teams can keep some really good players. West Brom have Rondon and Berahino and did for United today, which puts our failure to take three points off them last week into perspective. I for one would love a bit of turnover at the top, similar to the Seventies, rather than Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and United make top four every season.

I think the sports science now gets the best out of the journeyman footballer. An average but extremely well-drilled team can make it extremely difficult for a side at the top to break them down. Pulis knows that better than anyone.

And sports medicine is incomparably better. However even the best medics and cryotherapy treatment would still struggle to keep Stringy, super-sub of the early seventies, fit to keep playing when his legs have gone further than nature ever intended.

I'm sure Ooh I say was Barry Davis. Didn't Gerard Sinstadt get sacked for a sex scandal?

Better and safer now, is it?
