Balj Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 They could be describing Los Zorros http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/apr/24/diego-simeone-atletico-madrid
Filbert_Ross Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 Nice to see someone not spelling it Athletico for once.
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 A fair comparison, but Athleti are on another level to us. The competiveness and organisation installed by Simeone into that side is unreal. I know people on here get precious when other fans say we are leading a weak league but when you're up against the two Spanish juggernauts it is fair to say our acheivements look just a slightly paler hue in comparison. It's one thing keeping an unfit Aguero from goal vs Man City and another completely nullifying Messi to the point that he doesn't have a touch in the box for 90 minutes. Having said that they are a much bigger club than us and the resources they have had in the last 5 years still vastly outstrip ours.
Mythyaar Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 I've always liked the comparison to Atletico as what they achieved a few years back in winning La Liga was remarkable and under similar circumstances to what puts them currently in contention i.e selective rather than dominant possession and water tight defending from the top of the field down. Who knows, Ranieri could well have used the Atletico blueprint, or at least some parts of it, for us this season (at least the second half of it).
SpinneyHillRanger Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 One thing I would say we are a cleaner team than Madrid. Someone is very driven and a great manager achieving amazing things over there.... But he does go to great lengths to win, pushing the boundaries....for example Can't see Ranieri to tell a ballboy to throw a ball into the pitch when the opposition have a clear break on... Also players are very theatrical and also what could be called 'streetsmart' Would we even want win like that?
kingcarr21 Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 Nice to see someone not spelling it Athletico for once. I was gonna say the same thing but then you ruined it
shailen Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 I think it's more to do with the fact we both play with less possession. The other top teams generally have more possession but we don't like Atletico.
Balj Posted 25 April 2016 Author Posted 25 April 2016 It's the lack of possession and threat on the break as a game plan that draws the comparison for me - the intensity of the Vicente Calderon (I think they will miss that when they move in 2017/18) is also very similar to the KP at full throttle. I'm a 50 euro shareholder at Eibar but Atleti are the closest team to my heart aside from Leicester!
Finnegan Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 Up to and including Man City away I'd say we're more like the Bundesliga winning Dortmund. Insanely high energy pressing all over the park and very rapid transition from back to front. It's only recently we've become more cautious.
WesMorganGod Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 HELL NO. they fall over if you sneeze near them, rolling on the floor constantly, waving the imaginary fake yellow/red cards at the ref after every tackle. Going hysterical after every little foul. Not even close, we are a fantastic club with big respect and class, we are not low class.
Tielemans63 Posted 25 April 2016 Posted 25 April 2016 Nice to see someone not spelling it Athletico for once. A fair comparison, but Athleti are on another level to us. Literally the next post - brilliant
