Thracian Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 Will today's performance help to get a few more fans behind MDV?. He's never the prettiest of players but once again, he scored one, was around being awkward and taking attention when Kisnorbo scored and was generally proving awkward to the Watford defence whenever we went forward. He's by a distance our top scorer but, more than that he's playing a part in many of the moves that are giving chances to Hammond and Hume. A bit under-rated in my view, mainly cos he's such an awkward looking player. And, of course, all our attackers are looking better because of our renewed commitment to attack.
rossporterlc Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 i would still rather see hume and elvis but i am not going to complain about him with his current scoring record

Wellman Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 i think levein as decided as we dont seem able to defend that we HAVE to attack haha spose so
Durnerz Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 Hes a strange player, seems to miss the easiest chances or the ones with the most pressure attached and score the slightly harder ones, todays was from a tight angle, his goals against sheff wed were reaction strikes and the goal against stoke seemed hard with simonson filling the goal. If he can finish consistantly we'll have a good striker on our hands.
Louise Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 Will today's performance help to get a few more fans behind MDV?. No. He got two goals against Sheff Wed but a week later people were still running him down. Sadly I don't think he'll ever be a universally popular player, some people have already made up their minds. He was getting no end of stick on the Heart phone in yesterday.

If he can finish consistantly we'll have a good striker on our hands. It won't matter how many chances we miss if we keep creating them from every direction. The more this happens the more confidence will grow. If MDV misses, someone else will score. It is only when you don't create many chances that missing em becomes crucial. Look at it broadly. Whether it's football, a military attack or an attack by insects... not every individual in the assault will be successful and if the attackers lose heart the defenders are delighted. But if the attackers persist, probing first from this way, then that, it is a nightmare. That's what Levein should be aiming to create - a nightmare for the opposition, one where there's no hiding place and no means of escape.
PRIOR09 Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 I will always be behind him because i think opposition defences find it hard to control him. + he is doing what no one else in the team is doing, scoring goals!
Kis Kis Kisnorbo Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 I agree he would be a bitch to mark but im not sure if hes suited to english football. In scotland the tempo is a lot slower compared to the fast and furious tempo of the chamionship. Just seems to lack that sharpness to me.
lush Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 Will today's performance help to get a few more fans behind MDV?. Not me mate. Im not taking anything jon barber says as gospel, hes a media puppet. Would hume have scored instead, would hume be a better prospect all round, i rather think so.

filbertway Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 It sounded to me like Hume missed one that was easier to score. To be fair it sounded unlucky
davieG Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 To be fair it sounded unlucky Probably, but aren't nearly all near misses unlucky?
Frenzied Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 It's quite simple really. De Vries is a good player but unfortunately some of our less intelligent fans decide to get on his back. They're the problem.
Jay Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 It's quite simple really. De Vries is a good player but unfortunately some of our less intelligent fans decide to get on his back. They're the problem. I think that sums it up to be honest!! I think he has played well all season, is our top goalscorer and is a player that you don't realise you miss until he isn't playing!!! well done to the big man!!!
Gamesmaster Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 good on MDv, but his all round ability isnt great.
Anish Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 I still think the reason why so many fans dislike him is because: 1) He's so slow, he lumbers around the pitch and doesn't look like he'll ever outpace anybody 2) He can't head. Now that wouldn't be such a problem if he was short (or wasn't so tall) but when he's head and shoulders above most players around him it's unbelievable how few headers he wins. Until he scores some more goals and doesn't miss easy chances (sounded like he missed an easy chance in the second half which bobbled wide) there will always be people against him. Personally I think he's one of those players that frustrate you immensely when they are playing, but whose presence is missed when they aren't playing. Having said that, I'd still like to see Hume and Hammond given another chance together.
Guest Gist Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 It sounded to me like Hume missed one that was easier to score. MDV's was a much easier chance
Guest Gist Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 I thought today MDV was better in the air he actually jumped for some its just sometimes his final touch that lets him down

Thracian Posted 15 October 2005 Author Posted 15 October 2005 Probably, but aren't nearly all near misses unlucky? Never mind. At least we're starting to look dangerous in attack - and from more than one quarter at last.

Having said that, I'd still like to see Hume and Hammond given another chance together. It didn't work and it didn't look like it'd work. Like I've said, we put three in the Derby net in the second half and could easily have had four or five at Watford. And, all three strikers seem to be functioning and dangerous. Part of that is because MDV is so hard to mark and such a good team player. It is he who so often helps find that little bit of space for the others. He was even making a nuisance of himself for Kisnorbo's goal.
Jonbluefox9 Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 I like MDV because he's a genuine nice bloke off the field and also because he decided to come back early this summer to get his fitness levels up to a required level. The thing that annoy me about MDV is his attitude during games. I hate the way he moans at the ref for a long time after a decision is given against him and the way he gets booked for kicking the ball away like he did against Derby. That goes for any footballer tbh. Get on with the game, play to the whistle and don't get silly bookings. I still think the reason why people don't like MDV too much is because of his start at Leicester. The problem is, a lot of the people that were calling him a 'donkey' last season are still judging him on those performance eventhough he has come out himself and said that he knows he wasn't at his best or fully fit. Thankfully some of the people that were calling him a 'donkey' have changed their opinion of him. I wouldn't blame him for sticking two fingers up at some City fans everytime he scores because I don't think he deserved as much criticism as he got but having said that he has still got room to improve.
TrickyTrev Posted 15 October 2005 Posted 15 October 2005 MDV's was a much easier chance Yeap and Hume hit the inside of the post where as MDV scuffed his shot wide. Having said that MDV was one of our better players today and was the focal point of everything good we did in attack.
