I've been mulling this over, and thought it might make an interesting topic for conversation. Someone brighter than me might be able to produce an exponential curve. So, in light of Bosman and the bonkers nature of the game nowadays, what does the length of a contract REALLY mean? These are my initial thoughts.

1 year or 1 year extension - we have no plan or hope of retaining you further.

2 year - now I think about it, I cannot recall someone signing for 2 years, but there must be loads. Doesn't suggest any great potential sell on value.

3 years - 1.5 years.

4 years - we expect 2 years out of you.

5 years - we expect 2.5 to 3 years out of you.

By no means definitive, but I'd be interested in variations on this. There will of course be anomalies, such as the Matty James contract, so I'm trying to nip that red herring in the bud right now!

Yes anyone under 30 and worth money will get a 4 year deal that gives the club 3 years where the

player will have sell on value. The last year their value will diminish.Lower down the leagues the shorter the contract lengths.Leagues 2 and national players will often go through their careers on 1 year deals and a 2 year deal will be a luxury,it’s a hard life down there.

Don't understand why some clubs offer new managers 2-3 year etc contracts, with them being very unlikely to serve the whole of that contract - especially when they're under the more pressure than players when their club has a bad period.

Therefore, rolling contracts should be consider more.

Agents will never go for it. If one club offers you a rolling contract, there will be plenty of others who will give you a 2-3 year contract.

It’s about the same as someone getting 10 years for some hideous crime ..    never means 10 years but really means 5 if you are a good boy ...   bit of a joke imo.

With the way things are going maybe managers will start signing short term deals but with massive

rewards for reaching end of season targets.Would hate it to go that way but hardly anyone survives for more than a year now anyway in any division

Length of contract has nothing to do with length of service. It’s about money. On one hand the player’s / managers incentive is they are guarenteed the financial sum of the contract and for the club they are guarenteed that length of service or the ability to gain back / profit on the player if they leave early.
