Anish Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 and exactly how many games have you judged him on ? We only paid £250 000 for him ffs That's a bit of a contradiction. £250k is a lot of money to us - he's one of Levein's most expensive signings! More than Maybury, more than Hughes, more than Sylla, Douglas, Henderson, Hammill, Kisnorbo - the list is endless! For £250,000 he has been awful so far. I'm not writing him off but from what I've seen of Gilbert I am not impressed in the slightest. He has been ripped apart in every game that I've seen him play and I'm glad he's nowhere near the 1st team at the moment.

Most of the players mentioned above were surplus to requirement at their previous clubs, and nobody else was interested in them, thats why we got em cheap. We weren't the only club interested in Gilbert, hence the fee. Levein said when he signed him that his potential was the reason why he decided to buy him.
cisono Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 gilbert is awful he was supposed to be a good prospect load of good that turned out to be Well that is a bit of a premature statement... he hasn't "turned out" at all ... YET!
Nationwider Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 Gilbert is, like, sooooo Peter Canero. I think the fella needs some games to get his pecker up again. A couple of months on loan at another Championship side wouldn't do him any harm.
TAFKA Castroneves Posted 1 November 2005 Posted 1 November 2005 Gilbert should be going on loan rather than the rumours surrounding Sheehan going, for the money paid we really need to try and give him time - he is far from the finished article and it would be a lot of money to waste, he does have potential it just needs to be honed. Time will tell on his front.
cisono Posted 2 November 2005 Posted 2 November 2005 Well, for the moment Gilbert is playing in the Reserves...
The People's Hero Posted 2 November 2005 Posted 2 November 2005 I'd rather Tom Tejan Sie was getting a game. Now there's a REAL name.

Scow Posted 3 November 2005 Posted 3 November 2005 I think Levein needs to say something about Gilbert. He may be one for the future, but we shouldn't have paid 250k just so he can play in the reserves. That won't exactly aid his development. Granted, he's not been impressive, but we need clarification on the situation. After playing a number of reserve and Wales U21 games, he should be in a position where he's match fit now.

People say he COULD turn out to be a good player but at 21 and 100+ games under your belt chances are your at a level somewhere near your best or should be and there aren't many players who are crap at 21 and go on to be good players 3 or 4 years down the line. There are exceptions i'm sure but the way Levein has dumped Gilbert in the reserves and not even mentioned him for months indicates to me he's as good now as he'll ever get. He'll be out by January I reckon.

It's not as if he's not played well at this level, although there seems to be doubts about his consistency, now there's a novel situation for LCFC players. If it's confidence then it's difficult for CL to resolve, loaning out could help but I can't see another Championship team obliging if we're not prepared to play him and sending him to a League 1side is not exactly going to fill him with confidence. So CL's only option is to keep playing him in the reserves until he improves. Likewise if he is a lemon then loaning out won't help either the club or the player so it's back to the reserves. The thing is can he really be that bad, he's still picked for the U21, ok not the highest level in the land but a reasonably indication that someone else rates him. To quote an independant source from a non-LCFC supporter at the recent reserves game, from the Foxfanzine site: " One of the lads I work with went. Drew 1-1. He said he was impressed with the left back. Turns out to be Gilbert." I can't see CL making any statement re Gilbert, besides he wont see it as a problem as long as he's playing Nissa at LB and with Sheehan in the wings. Only time will tell, lots of players need time to settle, even the so called greats and that's something the lads not had.
