Nicklaus didn’t want to see his mate potentially miss a short put and have to live with that for the rest of his life. The US still drew the match and retained the cup so it’s all good really.

It sort of happened at Medina in 2012 when Woods conceded the last match to Molinari so Europe won outright instead drawing and retaining. The difference being Woods couldn’t be arsed and had lost all motivation once Kaymer holed that putt in the match ahead (Woods’ US captain and team mates were well pissed off with him for it apparently) But you’re right, the true sportsmanship Nicklaus showed in ‘69 doesn’t really happen in golf these days.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 21 February 2020 Posted 21 February 2020 To have the mindfulness to commiserate a fellow competitor after winning one of the greatest test matches ever was pretty special.
UpTheLeagueFox Posted 21 February 2020 Posted 21 February 2020 The greatest act of sportsmanship was surely the 2015-16 season when the other 19 Premier League clubs worked together to allow us to win the title.
