I never actually went to the Charlotte (though knew a few people who played there) - feels like I missed out on stuff.  (Spent more time round the corner at the (Old) Phoenix Arts Centre on Sundays...

Went to a lot of really good gigs there, and my fair share of shite ones.

Nothing sums up "intimate gig" like the Charlotte, pretty sure I was one wrong door away from walking in on Fozzy's changing room once! Leicester has been largely dead as a tour stop for a long time, even 15 years ago, so it always struggled to draw crowds in my teenage years. The "Academy" at Leicester Uni can't compete as an experience though.

Went to and played a few gigs myself (in my sh!t metal band I was in) in the latter years of The Charlotte, will miss that place. They got some unbelievable bands in over the years.

Incredible venue with really bad sound. Used to love it and it’s a big miss to Leicester.

 

My ears hurt just imagining Raging Speedhorn and Napalm Death on that sound system.
