midtablethatsallwewilleverbe Posted 9 November 2005 Author Posted 9 November 2005 You thought that he was bad on Saturday? im talking about walcot performance not smiths
Gené and Tonic Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 Smith is good, but Walcott has more potential, but I haven't seen either of them enough to determine who is the better at the moment.
Guest Gist Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 Smith had a much better game than Walcot on saturday when he actually got the ball
davieG Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 i cant believe some of the things im hearing from my friends that smith is a better player than walcot when on saturdays performance he clearly isnt Maybe he is and may he isn't but what is more unbelievable is that seeing a player making his debut for a team he is on loan to enables people to judge him at all.
Adidas Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 They're both great players at such young ages...both got bags of potential... i think at this minute in time smith is the better of the two because he is slightly older...but give it a little time and with experience walcott will be the one to watch
Libertine Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 Smith is good, but Walcott has more potential, but I haven't seen either of them enough to determine who is the better at the moment. Totally agree there. When Smith actually got the ball on Saturday, he made things happen and livened the game up. All Walcott did was get caught offside.
Bert Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 Totally agree there. When Smith actually got the ball on Saturday, he made things happen and livened the game up. All Walcott did was get caught offside. And get took out by Big Rab!! I thought Smith was the better player on the day because he did more.
City_4_Life Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 This is a view from an Arsenal fan on Theo Walcott:He looks more like the next SWP to me, he's quicker and nimbler on his feet than both Rooney and Beckham. Anyway, we don't need him cos we've got Ryan Smith Let liverpool have him, they need a decent player. I read this in a earlier thread and i think it says alot cumming from an arsenal fan
Bert Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 I read this in a earlier thread and i think it says alot cumming from an arsenal fan yeah but thats just someones opinion on the situation! like what we're talking about now!!
shadowman Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 why are you compareing them they play in two different postions that walcot is over rated if he is that good then why has chelsea or man utd and arsenal gone in for him and they dont need the club permission to speak to him about a contact because he only 16

Head Honcho Posted 9 November 2005 Posted 9 November 2005 I would choose Smith but no doubt CL would choose Walcot cause he's "one for the future"
Ric Flair Posted 10 November 2005 Posted 10 November 2005 There are a few people who aren't making sense in this thread, please can people read through their posts before they post them! Walcott is highly sought after and that's why Chelsea are rumoured to have offered £8 million for him. He has alot of hype about him but on saturday's performance he has a long way to go to be ready for the rigours of the Championship let alone the Premiership. I've seen Smith 3 times now and every time he gets the ball he makes something happen, whether that's taking players on and releasing a decent pass or winning a throw, free kick or corner but he rarely ever loses the ball. He has all the ingredients to be a world class player and i'm sure he'll be a first team regular at Arsenal within 2 years. England need to look no further than Smith for the left hand side role, perhaps not now but in a few years when he has premiership experience.
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 November 2005 Posted 10 November 2005 why are you compareing them they play in two different postions that walcot is over rated if he is that good then why has chelsea or man utd and arsenal gone in for him and they dont need the club permission to speak to him about a contact because he only 16 Yes he's 16, with a full time playing contract. Which means they do have to bid for him. Where would half the talent in this country be if players could up and leave at 16? Why would Chelsea be rumoured to be preparing at 8 mil bid if they could just take him? Secondly he's 16 as I said before the match his not going to play in every game and he certainly isn't going to play well in every game. Getting caught offside that often is a sign of inexeperince, the lad will become one of the best strikers in England given time ( given the time to learn at first team level, so F**K off u cheslki mofo's). Smith has a spark about him, he's problem on Saturday was he didnt see enough of the ball. Players Like Tiatto and Williams saw to much of it :-(. We will be lucky to keep him until the end of the season, and on his return to arsenal he will become and fringe player within 18 months Id say. Ric is right he rarely loses the ball, he rarely losses the ball. most tackelts that fly in on the lad result in the ref blowing his whistle or Smith running past them. I don't know about England in two years, but I will be suprised if he's not running down the left in South Africa 2010.

But they have to pay compensation that why if someone really wants him they would have done that. Chelsea have done it many times before and now they are been made to pay out a load of compensation to clubs.

Yes because they have stolen players on scholarships, and youth contracts, Theo Walcott has a full time first team playing contract! Why would chelsea be preparing a 8 mil bid if they could take him! Why has Redknapp said he isnt going for 8 mil or any amount of money for that matter. Because he is under contract! you can sign at 16 not 17. that how old you have to be to work full time in England.

If he's worth 8 Million then 8 Million or there abouts is the compensation Soton will expect if any club decide to poach him. If he has his head screwed on he'll stay where he is for now. You only have to look at Scott Parker et al to know that Chelsea coming in for you isn't always a good thing.
Sparky Posted 10 November 2005 Posted 10 November 2005 i thought both were well below par on saturday but both do have great potential . ive seen every game smith has played so far and in fairness he had a great half hour vs derby then not been overly impressed with him after that. i hope he does not fall in to the luxury player mould and i still think he has potential to be our best attacking creative player . i dont see him being in arsenals 1st team ever unless he brings his game on a whole lot more

I know he's only young and perhaps he doesn't want the other players to think he's a big time charlie by demanding this, that and the other but it's obvious that when he has the ball Leicester are at their most dangerous. At Derby he was explosive, since then he's shown when he has the ball how good he is. It's down to him and the other players to realise how good he is and how essential it is that he's given the ball, perhaps a more central role would benefit us both as the ball is often played through the middle than out wide. At Arsenal he'll be given the ball time after time and would get to show exactly how good he is, i'd have no question marks over his inclusion in Arsenal's first team. I haven't seen many better youngsters than Smith this season.
davieG Posted 10 November 2005 Posted 10 November 2005 Some clarification on Walcott - From Sky Real Madrid are the latest name to be linked with highly-rated Southampton youngster Theo Walcott. The 16-year-old is presently the hottest prospect in English football, and according to his Spanish intermediary, Walcott's burgeoning reputation is earning him admirers throughout the top echelon of European clubs. "There was an enquiry from Real Madrid in the summer," Colin Gordon told the Daily Star. "And he could have gone to Chelsea, United, Arsenal or Liverpool. Everyone was aware of Theo but he chose to stay [at Southampton]." Gordon also revealed details of the youngster's current pay deal, continuing: "Theo is on £80-a-week and, just like the other lads, until he is 17 he can't be paid professional wages. "The rules will not change just because it's Theo Walcott." Although the fleet-footed striker is currently happy at St Mary's, it seems that with such potent suitors pursuing him he is unlikely to remain on the South Coast long after his 17th birthday.

Which is a shame because he is no where near the finished article. It may be good for him in one respect, and that is that if he will be amongst other great players, but you can't beat 1st team experience to help you develop as a player and i fear he will have limited 1st team chances if he decides to go elsewhere. This is happening more and more with many of our up and coming youngsters and many of them we find never reach their full potential. Harry Redknapp is IMO the best manager in England if you are a youngster on the up. His record speaks for itself.
surrifox Posted 10 November 2005 Posted 10 November 2005 Looked like Gerrbrand had Walcott in his pocket for most of the match, of course that could be a measure of Gerrbrand's ability
Ric Flair Posted 10 November 2005 Posted 10 November 2005 Looked like Gerrbrand had Walcott in his pocket for most of the match, of course that could be a measure of Gerrbrand's ability I'd say it is. I honestly think Levein has struck gold with Gerrbrand. He'd been after him for 3 years before he finally signed him this summer. Now you've got to really impress a manager if they are going to keep trying to sign you year after year and the persistance has paid off. Levein's record on signings is good and Gerrbrand could be his #1
