Nationwider Posted 16 November 2005 Posted 16 November 2005 The person who will eventually buy my house. ASAP.
Thracian Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 Do you know why they call me Nobbo? I want to meet Maggie Thatcher and give her a one way ticket to hell and not back. With Thatcher working folk got the chance to buy their council houses. With Blair he takes anything you've accumulated away in vicious and extortionate hidden taxes. With Thatcher you got the Poll tax with Blair you get the Council Tax. With Thatcher at least we had to be attacked first before going to War (which mainly involved military casualties). With Blair he starts a War on a pack of lies, effectively kills loads of women, children, innocent civilians and effectively makes terrorism flavour of the month. So why so bitter? Why is Thatcher the worst name, apparently, that you can think of?
Cat Burger Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 Cobbo's got a problem with ALL women Thrac, a proper sexist.

Mining was doomed anyway, Thatcher took the chance to break the unions. Good thing, I wouldn't want to be like France, were the unions have too much power. Don;t like the look of the weather? Strike!

It was, but do you have to take so many people's only form of income away so suddely when they know little else? No plans for re training or re employment basically forcing so many communities into slums. Great that, are these people not human beings also as well as the rich yuppies in London?

Thracian Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 Who said owt about liking Blair? No-one as far as I can see. What I said were by way of comparisons that would make me ask why you sound so bitter about Mrs Thatcher?. That's all.

Why is Thatcher the worst name, apparently, that you can think of? Thatchers government took more money from me then this government ever will. Only then they didn't call it taxes they called it high interest rates Yeh she allowed working folk to buy their council houses only for the bank/building societies to reposses them 2/3 years later when they couldn't afford the mortgage repayments, and millions more who took out endownment mortgages are now realising that they do not have a big enough endownment to pay the house off!
D4 Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 its got to be julian joachim. hero and all that. my brother had a game of pool with him! about 4 years ago. JULES!
The People's Hero Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 I think the Great Man deserves capitalisation and correct spelling! Gary Lineker. Legend.
Thracian Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 now i'm no great blair fan (although i am better off under blair/brown than thatcher/lawson or major/lamont/clarke) but lets not forget hessletine devised the council tax for john majors' govenment. when did we all become kuwaitis? go to many broken drug addled former mining villages and communities and ask again who's name is worse than thatchers. having said that, reducing the power of the unions was a good thing. p.s i live near grantham and there's hardly any mention of thatcher at all so there not that proud ofher either. I'm not making a case for anyone, just interested. I have lived much of my life in or around mining areas and the irony is they seem much healthier, sounder, less vulnerable communities than ever before with much more variety of industry and the benefits of considerable inward investment. Judging by the number of ill health claims that had to be settled by the industry closing the coal mines was probably the best thing that ever happened to those people - certainly to the likely longevity of their offspring. Tradition dies hard in mining areas - and support for Labour was virtually obligatory where I grew up - but I don't know that I could find any "broken, drug addled former mining villages" in Leicestershire. The mineworkers I know have proved themselves adaptable and some speak of their great joy at never having to go underground again. I'm not saying everyone's found it easy to adjust but many used the changes (and the compensation/collateral in their houses) to build a new and better life. Certainly I've not noticed any general malaise in North Leicestershire. Mineworkers are too proud to feel sorry for themselves for long. Not that they were they too proud to buy their council houses to their considerable (and much deserved) benefit, cos most had too much common sense to pass up the opportunity. But they did so while (for the most part) continuing to vote Labour as immovably as some of us watch and support the City. Maggie would have known that so it might be said she offered the opportunity of a lifetime to her natural political enemies, surely something commendable in itself. I agree with you they may still curse her name (at least publicly). But many are still enjoying the benefits of things she did (both through their houses and, though some wouldn't want to admit it, through the closing of the mines). Even in Grantham I believe it will be rather like painters and composers. They'll only be proud of her when she's dead ... testimony I suppose to her undoubted air or superiority and arrogance. PS: Is the Red Lion at Newton still a good pub?. Many's the time we Used to queue out into the road for a meal there.
The People's Hero Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 My great-grandad died in a mining accident in Leicestershire. For some reason, I wanted to add that.

The People's Hero Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 Shockingly, I'm not entirely sure, which I'm quite ashamed about. It's not covered in the book I have on the history of my family either. Interestingly (for me anyway) the last James Woolerton in my direct line was killed when he was trampled on as his horse bolted. He was a blacksmith. Wish I'd done my dissertation on that and not the hosiery trade in Leicester. Anyway... back on topic folks...
Guest Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 THATCHER THATCHER MILK SNATCHER! Nuff said! MY milk as well.
cisono Posted 17 November 2005 Posted 17 November 2005 I was going to say "no one". But, on second thought, meeting Gary Lineker would be awesome
