He really was a great player. Only saw him on TV. (didn’t go to the 1972 European qualifier at Wembley - couldn’t get a ticket, watched it in on the box, we were rubbish and of course he scored in an easy 3-1 win for them)
 

My overriding memory of him is that he was so fit. Like the Duracell bunny he never stopped moving. A defenders nightmare, the most lethal top level goal scorer of the 1970’s. He was key to Germany winning in 1974. Too young to go.

Scott Murray in the Guardian today writes about Muller's second 'goal' in the 1974 World Cup Final, which he says was wrongly disallowed for offside. I had a look to see if I could find footage to confirm that. Well, it's a candidate for the worst offside call in history. 

 

You can see Muller by the penalty spot, with Wim Rijsbergen maybe four yards behind him.

 

Muller controlled the ball as it came over and with a typical finish made it 3-1. Except it was ruled out, and Holland spent the last half hour of the game coming very close to an equaliser.
