This could be of interest to some in here, there's an excellent episode of Inside No. 9 which centers around a cryptic crossword writer.  The episode is called The Riddle of The Sphinx and if you're not familiar with the series it's quite a dark short story/drama, but if you're into crosswords it's well worth half an hour of your time. It's series 3, episode 3 and on iPlayer:

Unrelated to this was the appearance in the Daily Telegraph cryptic crossword during the approach to D-Day in 1944 of several top-secret codewords, such as Utah, Omaha and Overlord. And yet codewords in cryptic crosswords seem strangely appropriate!

Another link between crosswords and WWII was Alan Turing's test for potential recruits to Bletchley Park.

Here are two clues he might have struggled with. Both have the same answer.

1. Football forum that taxes folk, possibly? (9)

2. Strangely, talk of sex isn't that forum's main purpose! (9)

Right I haven't given up on these yet but just for a bit of fun I'll put these 2 up that I'm struggling with.

Opportunity to refuel in worst place-and best (two words) 7 letters.

Article uses new Greek hero.

Theseus for the 2nd? ("The" (definite article) & "uses" reordered)

Pit Stop for the 1st - refuel, it's "the pits" etc. Less sure of that one.....

I knew the second one would be  something to do with Greek mythology but I'm not that clued up on that.

1st one makes sense to me.

I'm not clued up on Greek mythology either. When I was about 10, I used to read story books about it, but all such knowledge has vanished from my brain due to age and past alcohol abuse.

But "T_E" and "article" shouted out "definite article -THE" to me, then I remembered there being a Theseus......and "uses" v. "seus" makes sense.

I'm less confident of "pit stop" - not sure where the "best" bit comes in? Maybe "stopping for a pit stop", as in rest, food & drink, being a pleasure?

2 words? French words?

It didn't say 2 words but you might think that and it is of French origin I believe.
