Now Rooney has left Derby

It reminds me of when Avram Grant was Portsmouth manager and they were bankrupt and bottom of the league but he was still getting praised for not sitting on 0 points. Then when he went to West Ham, a job he got off the back of that Portsmouth job, he was horrific and relegated them.

 

It’s a win win situation for a manager when you go into a bankrupt team. All you have to do is not lose every game and people praise you for being competitive and no one would blame you even if you had 0 points, everyone would just talk about the circumstances.

 

I’m with those who are baffled wt the praise Rooney has got. Not saying he’s going to be an awful manager, but people are massively overpraising him for not really doing anything. And there’s no way you can read into him being a good PL manager in the future based on it. Plenty of managers have done far more in the lower leagues and not made the step up.

 

Plenty have managers have done better for keeping bankrupt teams up as well fwiw. We got promoted while bankrupt  under Micky Adams as did Bury a couple of seasons back. Paul Ince has got nowhere near the praise as Rooney for going in and keeping Reading up while strapped for cash and having a points deduction either.

I feel you are massively underplaying how hard it must be to manage in that situation. Players not being paid, motivating players to win games when you're on minus points, when these players might be sold at any time, Rooney said himself he was working 20 hour days helping staff and players in crisis, to deal with the non football side and still put up a fight to stay up, in his first ever job? Pretty decent. You might be right, he might flop, but I can't believe how people slate and right off young managers before they've even really had a chance.

I don’t think Rooney has proven anything yet, needs another couple of jobs before we know what he is about.

I haven't slated or wrote him off, I just said you can't really judge him to be a future PL manager based on relegating Derby, he's in a win-win situation in terms of his reputation in a job like that, he can't really do his reputation down in that job as people offer up excuses of the circumstances and has built up his reputation in getting a team relegated, As I said, I remember Avram Grant being hyped for similarly making Portsmouth competitive despite still being bottom of the league when they were bankrupt.

In reality, I don't think you can read much into his job at Derby either way. Certainly don't think you can already judge him as a future PL manager from it.

He has been reported as having massive gambling issues and has self-confessedly fought alcohol abuse problems, including being done for drink driving.

 

He was promoting NFT's (which are now worth bob all) to hard up fans along with that other human dustbin, John Terry, last year.

 

He famously lost his rag on multiple occasions for club and Country.
