st albans fox Posted 5 April 2025 Posted 5 April 2025 I think we may see trump do a couple of deals this week where the USA and other countries remove tarrifs between themselves completely (inc the 10%) These will likely be planned and gerrymandered to try and make it seem that they’re being reasonable and that there is a way out of this for those govts who want to be ‘reasonable’. I don’t think they realise just how badly in general they’re viewed across the world.

Quite apart from being utterly morally abhorrent, it's also practically incompatible with any kind of future that doesn't involve horrific dystopia. 2

For one thing, as if Israel being a "democracy" and an "ally" (both subjects of debate in of themselves) makes any policy they share with, say, the Chinese, somehow palatable.

leicsmac Posted 7 April 2025 Posted 7 April 2025 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz79ewg193ro Crowds of protesters gathered in cities across the US on Saturday to denounce President Trump, in the largest nationwide show of opposition since the president took office in January. The "Hands Off" protest planners aimed to hold rallies in 1,200 locations, including in all 50 US states. Hundreds of thousands of people turned out in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC, among other cities. Protesters cited grievances with Trump's agenda ranging from social to economic issues. Coming days after Trump's announcement that the US would impose import tariffs on most countries around the world, gatherings were also held outside the US, including in London, Paris and Berlin. Not sure how much it'll amount to, but...

Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 April 2025 Posted 7 April 2025 (edited) I've come to realise that Trump is in fact Calvin. Remarkably similar hair too. Edited 7 April 2025 by Trav Le Bleu

Dunge Posted 7 April 2025 Posted 7 April 2025 Read an interesting comment today that this will also hurt the Russian economy by proxy. So I’m not sure they’re that happy about it all despite the exemption.

The thing that will make Russia and China happy is that developing countries in Africa and the Middle East now no longer have the US as an option to trade with so will turn towards China and Russia.

leicsmac Posted 7 April 2025 Posted 7 April 2025 It is rather rare that someone actually this committed to seeing the world burn so that they can be king of the ashes actually gains a real measure of power. And every time, the cost to remove them is high. One can only hope that cost won't be too high this time.
leicsmac Posted 7 April 2025 Posted 7 April 2025 Just now, Dunge said: China are going to benefit the most from all this in the long term. That's the most likely scenario. The less likely but more scary scenario is that no one wins, but everyone loses. A lot.

And to add to this, thanks to Chinese tech a lot of the sub-Saharan nations are pretty much 100% non fossil fuel in terms of their energy infrastructure.

Did the U.K. ban Geert Wilders from entering in 2009? I’m pretty sure he was a sitting Dutch mp at the time. I think these two MP’s were invited to appeal to the courts to review the interior minister’s decision and given hotel accommodation whilst they waited. They chose to return next day rather than do that. I don’t know if mr wilders had the right to appeal or if he too didn’t take up that option. I think we banned him before he came.
