I have it on good authority that we should have been calling him Kespur Schmeekle

I don’t give a shit if Danes, Zambians or Argentines get ‘Leicester’ garbled.

People get things wrong in their own tongue because some words are just difficult or plain weird.

Expecting 100% faithful, native pronunciations is the sort of exceptionalism some people (not the OP) decry.

ngl I was with you until Argentinians

It wouldn't occur to me not to at least try.

So where do you go to learn all these correct pronounciations?

Well, if I were a journalist, I'd make it my business to ask the relevant people, out of respect. I'm a musician, I've been taught to use my ears and listen. I wish people did it more.

But if I wanted to know this sort of thing now, there are endless resources. I'm sure you've heard of the Internet.

I disagree. not least because nobody is 'expecting' any such thing.

So nobody's expecting it, but it's 'disrespectful not to try'!

Inclined to agree with you. We can all laugh about it but I think it falls into 2 camps of those who attempt to speak a local language on holiday and those who don't.

Hey all. I have been listening to a lot of your different podcasts lately, and noticed the pronounciation of the Danish players names were quite off:

Mads Hermansen actually sounds like:

Mass (silent D) Hairmansen

Vestergaard actually sounds like:

Vestergore

 😀

The reason we pronounce them wrong is because they are spelt wrong.

How the fok do you get Mass from Mads.

Personally the whole world should talk read and write in English.

Not our problem the rest of the world is stupid 🙄  ffs 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You all get VK right though it seems 😀

sorry for this, but listening to Chris from LTIDtv for the last few days has forced me to make this update 😀

Who asked?

I'm sorry, but while poor pronunciations can and do irk me, I realise that it's the same all over the globe. We are dreadful at pronouncing foreign names in Denmark too. We have even been so pretentious to give one of our famous dishes a French name (risalamande) only to completely butcher the pronunciation.

Danish is a HORRIBLE language to teach to foreigners and the way we spell versus the way we pronounce even gives most Danes a headache.

Good of you to point it out, but I wouldn't bother.

Also, they don't pronounce VK correctly in general. They are much closer to 'Kristensen', where the emphasis in Kristiansen is on the penultimate syllable (why?!).

Very fair point, if it wasn't for English being just as impossible :D
