Seems like the sinister intent of the authoritarian nightmare that is ULEZ is coming to pass, with frightening results: children with normal sized lungs.

A small price to pay for Sharia Law, or something.

 https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/aug/18/ulez-better-lung-size-function-london-children

Seriously though, the whole thing marked a low point in public debate. Basically poor people being misled by very rich people and encouraged to f*** themselves over

More on this:

And yet there were and are still those who apparently believe in their personal freedom to wreck childrens lungs with their specific cars.

Ha! Yeah, I probably should have gone for the BBC version myself.

Do you know what, I don't think people DO believe that when it comes to the crunch. It often feels to me that we're living in an age where a lot of resource goes into confusing people and making it hard for them to make even simple choices about what's in their own interests. You supposedly had people against the ULEZ because 'they couldn't afford to buy a Tesla' which seems unbelievable, and then I get some soft lad on here pointing out to me that an Electric Corsa is 30 grand like it's some sort of gotcha

You're right to not attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance (and as you infer, that's not wholly the beholders fault here either).

That being said, in this case the results of both ignorance and malice on the topic are the same.

Without wanting to belittle this tragedy, I could probably find hundreds of stories that more tragically show how cruel life can be and there will be thousands more that don't even make the news.

Sleep well everyone.

What an utterly bizarre post

The policy has been that effective that it's effectiveness has spread and it has even reduced particulate levels in cities such as Leicester that don't even have it. Hats off to Sir Sadiq.

Pretty handy £620m raised as well.

Just goes to show that when it comes to at least some environmental public health matters, perhaps it's better to proceed with policy first and ask for forgiveness (if it's needed) later.

No need to apologise to anyone with £620m to spend imo.

I think that really rather depends on the individual circumstances, but point taken.

oh thank god we’re telling them not to rape children. That’ll sort it.

I'm not being funny but isn't this exactly the kind of integration education of non-western immigrants people have been asking for? I know you have to be ultra cynical of everything on the internet but I'm sure this is just part of bigger campaign and I'm hazard to admit this on the internet, but surely its a good small step in the right direction? You don't change people overnight, but you can over years with the right education and campaigns (see smoking habits or seatbelt wearing habits as a simple of examples of campaigns, posters and public service announcements like that, all of which were also snided away as "I'm sure that'll sort it" at first).

Are you trying to compare people being told to wear seatbelts with migrants raping little girls…?

But is it available in multiple languages?

If they cannot read English, how on Earth can they possibly know abusing children is wrong?

*Sigh* Mate, that "are you really comparing x to y" an old fallacy that doesn't work. I'm very clearly, obviously and explicitly not comparing them in any moral or legal or judgemental way whatsoever. I was simply using obvious examples we're all aware of of how people's behaviour absolutely does change over years due to campaigns. You dont have to be so cynical of absolutely everything, it's just a poster.

A pretty obvious false attribution fallacy, to be specific.

Oh your point about the smoking & seatbelt campaigns working is completely true. I’m saying it won’t work for this sort of thing because rape and treating women like shite is so deeply ingrained in the cultures of the places these men are coming from.

We have enough problems with our own native men treating women like crap to let countless more dangerous men in.

I dread to think how bad the data on migrant sex crimes they hide from the public are if this is what they’ve having to tell them

Controversial opinion but I don't think it's a great idea that the UK's immigration policy is to admit people from cultures where rape and sexual abuse is commonplace and accepted and then try to 'integrate' them with a poster campaign.

I reckon if we ask really nicely they might change

I mean, making the assumption that the cultural judgement here is true we could also leave them to stew in their own ways of horrible suffering while avidly backing foreign policy decisions that greatly enlarge that suffering because they're them, we're us and clearly they don't know any better.

That's clearly another option on the table here.

Probably would have saved us a few lives in Afghanistan tbh.

Well, I appreciate the basic honesty of purpose regarding the death and suffering of other human beings, in any case.  Most people try to dress it up in some form of self-serving justification or deny it entirely ("that's not what I said" etc).

I genuinely cba with the snarky comments and trying to turn it into a jumping off point for starting yet another discuss about immigration tbh. Genuinely think it must be utterly exhausting to be so obsessed with immigration that you search this stuff to get wound up enough to make snarky comments and be ultra cynical about such an innocuous poster.

I dunno, the Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society would have worked rather well imo.
