Cooper was an abysmal appointment, RVN was crap but he inherited a very shit situation, Cifuentes was mediocre. This team is capable of getting promoted, it’s certainly much more talented than the rest of the division.

 

There are still much bigger, background issues but the way we’re set up, especially defensively is fixable - we don’t have a curse or a hoodoo we just need to make some semi-sensible decisions.

 

Keeping Martin jeopardises the sale, KP’s finances, the future of the club so they do actually have to sort something out.

 

I hope:

A) Everything pans out absolutely fine, we click and Martin takes us up (not happening)

B) We realise our mistake quickly and sack him and appoint a sensible manager - ideally Challinor but anybody with a decent track record that works well with a young squad 

So right, problem is the club were too busy talking about a "project" discounting the difficulty in getting out of this division. Also ignoring the person in charge of the "project" had only had one good season in his career and a few ok ones and 2 really bad ones.

Interesting looking at Opta stats, paints a very poor picture of Martin.

 

 

=24th for goals from subs (=3rd most subs made)

1st for errors leading to shots

10th for xG

22nd for xG per shot

21st for set piece xG

24th for fast breaks

1st for passes, 3rd for final third passes

24th for forward passes

5th for backward passes 

1st for passes per sequence 

23rd for attack speed

13th for shots against 

15th for xG against 

18th for shots conceded in the box

 

Without checking I'm sure these patterns would reoccur throughout Martin's spells at other clubs

Anyone believe ol' Toustle Martin has what it takes to get us promoted? Is he being judged too quickly by a 'told you so' mentality?

Is it being unfair to underestimate the task at hand...

 

Rebuilding an overhauled squad, integrating new players and young academy products with limited senior experience. Resetting standards, improving the culture and trying to lift the club after back to back relegation. Implementing his playing style (whether you like it or not) with the pressure of an expectant fan base and a non negotiable target of promotion. All of this knowing the majority of fans didn't want him and some are very firmly in the 'told you so' camp unwilling to overlook some of the factors that might excuse an imperfect start. Yes, it's horrible when the team make errors and goals are conceded because of the playing style but that team goal Saturday was absolutely terrific. It didn't happen by accident, and it shouldn't have been a one off either because 2.4xG tends to suggest otherwise.   

 

This fanbase has PTSD because of the trauma the club has put us through over the past two seasons and positive results are required to provide healing. The frequent personnel changes tell us RM still isn't settled on his best team and he needs to find the right solution, quickly. The league table will look very different when he does.
