Former Player Remembers - David Lowe

After making 159 appearances for Ipswich Town, striker David Lowe joined us in July 1992. During four seasons at Filbert Street, he played 108 games for Leicester City.
In conversation with Club Historian John Hutchinson, David recently spoke about his 17-year career, playing 690 matches in the top five levels of English football, before developing a career as a coach.

I well remember his quality curler against fancied Spurs (Klinsmann and co.) in the 3-1 Prem. win! A false September dawn if ever there was mind!

Terrible posture when he ran if I remember him correctly! 

 

Was a decent player for us. Will always remember the 4 4 at Villa Park when we were 4 1 down late on. Think he got the equaliser. What a night.

David Lowe looked like a scowling little kid but scored some good goals when we made the fatal mistake of hiring John Duncan back in 1987-88. He was injured a lot with us and suffered from not being Kevin Wilson, another striker from the mid-80's who Ipswich relied upon for goals. That mid-late 80's team was an anachronism - nothing could compare to the earlier Robson years of Muhren and Thijssen and Mariner and Gates. It was briefly helped by John Wark returning, yet relied on the sort of players many Town fans still shudder to recall. The likes of Graham Harbey and John Hallworth and Nigel Gleghorn. 

 

True, we signed the Russian international sweeper Sergei Baltacha (then promptly never played him in his best position) and were supplemented by the Dozzells and Kiwomyas and Dave Linighans who would form the basis of the much, much better John Lyall sides into the early 1990's. But David Lowe remains, a little narrow-eyed, big-haired shrimp of a striker, who went to Leicester before our promotion and who only fans in their fifties like me can truly recall with any residual fondness.

I met him aged 7 and thought he was 6ft5.....turns out he wasnt anywhere near that

I was at that game too, Jones was kicking him so Lowe stuck one on him, red card. 
 

Scored a great goal v Spurs in a 3-1 win that same season.

Correct, quite early too, think Lowe scored then Jones started on him.

Not a patch on the early 80s Ipswich side under Bobby Robson of course but that was still a decent Ipswich side that underachived I felt, I rememebr you ran Man Utd / Fergie close in the FA cup that season too (1987-88). Hope we can at least give as good an account of ourselves tonight in the C.Cup as we did in the Championship against you last season!
