Our Defense

How long now has it been since we've had a decent defense? It seems that every defender we buy is honking. We really need to look at getting a defensive coach in, with Morgan, Huth etc not doing anything of note right now surely we could bring in one of them to sort out defense out (and the attitudes). The entire back 4 needs replacing ideally, as at the moment it's the defenders costing us games.

I would argue the last time our the defence was rock solid was when we won the prem. Simpson Huth Morgan and Fuchs all good defenders that did the simple stuff brilliantly. They also all chipped in with goals something we haven’t had for years.

The last one we had who were any good were Maguire, Evans and Fofana. Peak Ricardo on the right and Chilwell on the left. Since then we have been massively in decline either the likes of Faes, Vestergaard, Thomas etc. 

 

People over the past few seasons on here are constantly talking about strikers striker strikers. Of course they are important but I have said for a few seasons now that it is the fact we can’t keep goals out the other end that is costing us. A solid defence in terms of structure and personnel gives you the basis to grind out results. If you are consistently shipping 2+ goals a game more often than not across a season, it doesn’t really matter what you are doing at the other end!

They were definition of no nonsense, but they were not better than Ricardo fofana evans Justin.

He didn’t suggest they were better players, it was about being rock solid and doing the simple stuff.

 

But for what it’s worth, from those 2 teams, I’d probably say

 

Ricardo - Fofana - Huth/Morgan - Fuchs

 

Unsure between Huth or Morgan, depends who would compliment a partnership with Fofana better. Ricardo at his peak a no brainer. But 100% I’m having Fuchs at LB over Justin.

I didn't like Claude Puel but he coached and organised a good defence. 

 

What Rodgers inherited was excellent and we were top of a whole bunch of defensive Premier League stats in 2019. 

 

Rodgers got over confident, failed to compensate for Man City and Liverpool, got slapped and then lost confidence in them even though it was largely his own tactical failings, he just couldn't ever see that. 

 

It's been a long, slow, gradual decline ever since. 

 

It doesn't matter what players we sign, either. Martin just can't organise a defence. Ask fans of basically any of his former clubs.

They were good but not a patch on the prem winning defence.

Rubbish, I think when all fit that’s the best defence we’ve had. Sadly all had bad injuries at points which is unfortunate to say the least!

Vs 

 

Simpson - Huth - Morgan - Fuchs 

 

That's a tough one to pick between - the later certainly has more emotional connection with the Prem win. But which would you pick purely on ability wise taking out emotion?
