Deleted Threads

Recommended Posts

It's not unusual for threads to be 'disappeared', taken off to a re-eduction centre for their own good and for the good of us all by the admins.

I think it would be a good idea to have a sticky thread where the admins can detail which threads have been removed and try to explain the reason behind their removal. This would also give the affected parties a chance to protest the decision.

Regardless of who owns the bandwidth, deleting threads is tantamount to intellectual theft, and should not be done lightly. At the very least, I feel we are owed an explanation as to why such heavy-handed treatment was deemed necessary when threads are deleted outright.

I love that line! :D Usually though, threads which are deleted are because posters lack the intelligence to read other similar threads..and want the 'glory' or 'attention-seeking' method of people seeing their name on the main page. I agree there should be some sort of accountability but I would hardly call it intellectual theft ;)

You are talking rollocks lads, why does everyone think theres some kind of conspiracy theory going on here? Threads get taken off because theres been some sort of contravening of the rules or just a plain, stupid post whoring post. I dont know why people get so het up about it. Ive had posts removed, I dont bang on about it like my civil liberties have been taken away.

Try having a look at the rules and regs for whats acceptable every now and again, everyone ticks that they've read them when they sign up but I bet hardly anyone has.

:D

I've read them several times.

It annoys me often that interesting posts from myself and others on a thread are deleted because some idiot can't keep things civil or just doesn't know how to argue and as a result gets the thread deleted.

Surely just deleting the offending posts would be better for all?

Taking away without their permission something that someone else has created sounds like theft to me.

To my mind, there needs to be a very good reason for destroying something somebody else has made. What we are seeing from the admins borders on vandalism.

Yeah, fine.

However, it would not be difficult for one of the admin-y people to set up a sticky thread in one of the forums for the purpose of explaining why threads have been deleted. This would allow people to see clearly what is and isn't acceptable, and may reduce the need for future threads to be deleted.

I can think of no good reason why this hasn't already been done. Can you?

You post on here on your own free will. If you make a post that is deemed offensive and against posting guidlines then it is bound to get deleted or closed.

Also this isn't your site, so how can you bang on about "taking away without their permission"

If admin/mod see it as worthy as deleting they will do and there is nothing you can do about it.

The guidelines. What's your point?

I'm not saying that threads should never be deleted (although I do think a more "hands off" aproach to moderating would benefit Foxestalk) I'm saying that when threads are deleted the admin responsible should explain fully why they did it.

We all know there are rules, but it is possible to enforce those rules without acting like an internet version of the Stasi.

I've yet to hear any reason why the admins cannot just show a little courtesy and explain themselves when they delete threads.

Bertfox, you've missed the finer points of my argument.

If you contributed to a thread that kept within the guidelines and then the next day when you checked the entire thread had been deleted, wouldn't you want an explanation and maybe a chance to appeal?

I don't see what's so unreasonable about that.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--

because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--

because I was not a socialist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--

because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--

because I was not a Jew;

Then they came for me--

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

My point is, it states quite clearly what is and isnt accepted, maybe a little thought from you before you post may be appropriate. You may think its perfectly acceptable but admin/mods dont, thats their prerogative. As far as im aware there is no instant software that automatically sends notification of why a thread has been deleted on this board. Can you imagine for a moment the limited amount of mods/admin there are on here verus the amount of threads/posts they have to delete, they would have to resign from their jobs in order to keep writing PMs to people to explain why yet another ill thought out post/thread has gone.

Are you really that deeply upset and indignated that the odd thread on an internet message board has been removed? :ermm:

Bertfox is right, its Mr C's messageboard, he pays for it, he runs it as he sees fit.

Yes maybe so, but making a big fuss about it isn't the answer.

A little pm to admin would be a whole lot easier and they no doubt would've pm'd back explaining reasons why.

I know this 'cos it's happened to me before and got an answer back which was fair.

But whatever you do after a thread has been deleted/closed or a post has been removed there is no way that it'll return.

The annoying thing is when there is a good debate going on, it gets ruined and the whole thread gets deleted? Can admin/mods not gently push the thread back in the right direction? Or deleting any posts which add little to the debate?

It's annoying to type out a well-thought out, reasoned posts or 10 and then have them deleted because some 12 year old on half term hasn't developed any powers of reasoning or argument and brings the thread down to txtspk insults and offensive posts and the thread gets deleted.

I only delete threads that are replicating another on-going thread about an issue. For example when we sign a player or sell a player and we get 15 threads started about the same thing. I often do abit of merging where necessary as sometimes others post in the threads that get deleted and I don't want all the posts tpo go to waste, that takes time but I try to do it.

I certainly don't have the time or the humanity to PM general thickets who post unbelievably crap posts and threads, but if a thread gets deleted because of other issues then i'll try and send a PM to explain.

I don't get involved in deleting threads when people argue, etc.

It's not that simple. All of my posts have kept within the guidelines, yet a thread in which I posted (it was called "Good Vs Evil" or something) was deleted because, presumably, someone else was unable to keep within those guidelines.

It would be nice if everyone who contributed to the thread was told exactly why it was deleted. A short paragraph from the person responsible is all it takes.

I'm in favour of public disclosure rather than PMs, so everybody knows what has happened and why.

It wouldn't take too long for an admin to outline why a post has gone. A sentence or two would suffice.

Either it's only the "odd thread" which is going missing, or it's so many that the admins must "resign from their jobs" to deal with them all. Which one is it?

I think it would be better if the admins were more open about their actions. I don't see why you and Bertfox are so resistant to this.

Bertfox is right, its Mr C's messageboard, he pays for it, he runs it as he sees fit.

There is no reason why Foxestalk users should not offer feedback, comments or suggestions to Mr C or the admins, to make this excellent messageboard even better.

Thanks for picking apart my post :thumbup:

Me and Bertfox are not resistant to anything, maybe its because we've been around a bit longer and have seen threads like this time and again.
