What are the views of the FT electorate on this policy?

To sum up, the current situation is that anyone earning £32,400+ p.a. pays 40% tax on earnings over and above this threshold. The Lib Dems would like to see this raised to 50%.

Call me right wing but I think it stinks!:whistle:

I don't think it matters either way, the bottom line is they have to raise so much money, they either do it this way or slap it on the things we buy or do. When all said and done the people in the middle i.e. your average wage earning carries the heaviest burden proportionally.

What they really should be doing is cutting out all the silly expenditure, the list is absolutely endless.

Sort out the benefit system. If people really wanted to find jobs, they could. Why not give jobs to people, not like in workhouses but I'm sure the government can find jobs to pay people to do. If they turn down the work, they are, in my opinion not entitled to benefits.

Well they could recruit a few 'mini cops' to catch all the people dropping litter, parking where they shouldn't, chasing foxes, driving and using a mobile, pissing up the wall when drunk etc, etc, etc - this government has introduced so many on the spot penalty type offences, the trouble is they have no one to police them. So either scrap the penalties or recruit someone to catch and fine the buggers.

They'll get people off the dole queue, I've heard stadium stewards are ideal for this role and they only currently work part-time ;) at the same time they raise the revenue to pay them.

That's too sensible. We don't we just continue to tax hardworking, decent people to fund a ridiculous benefits system?

The thought of some benefit scrounging kids with ASBO's chasing and trying to police the upper class on horses who in turn are chasing foxes is a glorious image. Kind of like a rural royal rumble! I certainly couldn't pick a winner!:P

:clap::clap::clap: Fvcking too right!

I'd go even further then that "Open up the workhouses" If I can work hard for a living, so can all these fvcking scroungers.

I'd work them that hard they'd be too knackered to stick a needle in their arm or piss the child benefit up against the wall!

He wants 50% tax on those earning over 100,000. Its a publicity thing to make him look progressive and a bit leftish without actually damaging the middle class or pretty much anybody. Those who earn over a 100,000 are the same who are able to afford top accoutnants to ensure they don't pay anythign like 50% tax. ;)

(I actually thought Ming wanted to ditch this policy, its been a LIb Dem thing for a while)

All I'm saying is that, before all these spongers collect their dole cheques, they should give a bit back!

I don't give a shit how you pigeon-hole it left wing, right wing, fascist, marxist or Oliver Twist, nobody should get something for nothing!

We now have an underclass in this country where for 3 or 4 generations the same families have never worked, all they've done and all they know, is how to sponge off the rest of us

Yes done quite deliberately so that people like you and the political writers at the Sun can feel good about themselves beating somebody up.:mad::mad:

I am no Christian because I do not believe in an omnipotent God, but this passage from the Bible is something you and those that think like you should reflect upon.

Hallelujah

I don't have a problem giving to the genuinely needy, but half the dolemeisters around here have got more luxuries then me!

Thinking about it, one way to get them off their arses, might be to threaten to take away the skybox, we'd soon see em shift!

You'll perhaps change when you're older and wiser. If only life were that simple. i

I wonder how many will take the time and trouble to read that. And how many might be humble enough to change their outlook. I don't really see the passage as being about religion. It is about humanity. Giving for the greater good and without being judgemental, giving and not counting the cost, I guess.

I'm all for humanity and for giving to the genuinely needy. Of course a benefits system should be in place, what annoys me is those that simply choose not to work or whatever in order to play the system.

There's a statement I can agree with. It's all very well having a pop at the dole patrol, but the amount of this country's revenue that simply vanishes into thin air courtesy of creative accountancy, tax (ahem) planning or just straightforward fraud, is revolting.

The richer they get, the greedier they get. <_<

50%? what a fking joke

no wonder there are so many people living lives on benefits when you get penalised for trying hard all your life to earn a good salary

So a guy with £100,000 a year pays 50,000 post tax

these people really haven't got a clue and it's obvious our political system has become such an 'all pleasing party'. Policies are no longer set on what's best for everyone, but what will get them the vote.

You'd pay 50% on your earnings above £100,000.

So if you earned £102,000 a year, based roughly on the current system, you'd pay:

0% on the first 5,000 (£0)

10% on the next 2,000 (£200)

22% on the next 33,000 (£6,500)

40% on the next 60,000 (£24,000)

50% on the final 2,000 (£1,000)

Thats about £31,000 tax (+ NIC). If everybody pays all their tax at the same rates, there's no problem. It's the tax consultants, the tax evaders, moonlighters, Phil Collins and the phoenix companies that spoil it for everyone.

I think its gay what the government spens money on...

it shud be 10% tax for everyone, all hospitals dentistry, etc privatised and roads shudnt be rebuilt after 2 years of use (wtf leicester council?)

See how crime reduces after because everyone will have more money

anyway...

Phil Collins is a complete cretin. I remember him saying he'd leave the country if Labour won the election in '96 (along with Frank Bruno oddly enough). Why are you still here Phil

Now then, now then I'll have no accountant bashing on here! Totally agree with you on all fraud and illegal or even 'aggressive' tax schemes. But why shouldn't individuals of high net worth use an accountant to get them the lowest tax bill by legal means? The fees the accountant charges are subject to corporation tax don't forget plus it keeps your humble tax advisor in work and on their salaries that's a hell of a lot of PAYE and NIC.
