Pascal Chimbonda

Recommended Posts

Pascal Chimbonda has handed in a transfer request at Wigan Athletic.

The full back has enjoyed a marvellous first season at Premiership level and was named in the PFA Players' Team of the Season.

Despite having claimed in recent days that he was more than content at Wigan, Chimbonda has wasted little time in expressing a desire to leave.

The French right back has been linked with Bayern Munich, Tottenham and Manchester United in recent weeks and could now get his wish of moving to a club higher up the football pyramid.

Chimbonda's decision could not have come at a worse time for Latics boss Paul Jewell, with Jimmy Bullard having already left the club for Fulham despite an excellent campaign for the Premiership new boys.

Wigan have yet to comment on Chimbonda's decision.

On the Wigan OS it says he handed in his transfer request as soon as he got in the dressing room - he hadn't even taken off his kit at the time!

Whelan says he's on the transfer list, his price is £6m - if somebody stumps up the cash he can go. If the asking price isn't met, Whelan and Jewell agree that Chimbonda will see out the rest of his contract playing for the reserves.

I rate Chimbonda - he's been quality in all the games I've seen him in.

But today's actions are just really quite poor. It's one thing to want a transfer, it's quite another to hand in your request immediately after the final game of the season - in front of all your teammates.

The whole thing just smacks of his agent telling him "you're in demand."

They Rescued him from being the most hated player at St Ettiene didnt they?

Ungrateful willy puller.

Wigan are screwed next season.

Far from it. Wigan will be fine.

With Premiership status secured for next season, the purse strings will be relaxed a little. They raked in more Premiership money than expected because they finished tenth. They allegedly have a transfer kitty of £20m plus any funds coming in from players sold (so if Chimbonda is bought, that's £26m total) - and it's been said the wage bill will be more flexible this year.

They've got plenty to work with, they can probably finish top half again.

money is obviouslly a pre-requisite but it's no good if you can't attract the right players, that was their problem last season, if people are leaving after what was a bloody good first season for them then I would ay things could get a bit bleak.

Their form tailed off notably in the second half off the season.

Their morale doesn't seem that high. Paul Jewell could well have his work cut out to keep them up next year.

Granted, two high profile departures have suddenly made things look a little different, but I don't think it's going to be too damaging for them. At least this season they've proved they can compete which should help them attract players.

And who knows, perhaps Paul Jewell can find some gems from lower leagues or from other countries.

Since he's allegedly having a look at our Stearman, he's clearly got an eye for young talent :smile:

His agent is Willie McKay, second only to Eric Hall in the worst of the worst agents. He was the one who told Henri Camara to go on strike when Wolves went down until they sold him.
