dandannieldanok Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 I know nearly 95% of the English population are sceptical about his role tonight, including myself i admit, but i do sincerely hope that the fans in the stadium get behind him and he manages to put in a decent performance. Come on Owen!
martyn Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 I'm rooting for him so am biased, but he's been excellent so far.
macbeth Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 well I think he's played pretty well so far today... no-one has let us down
stez Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 no-one has let us down except micheal owens knee, the fukcer!!
dandannieldanok Posted 20 June 2006 Author Posted 20 June 2006 Quite impressive performance from HArgreaves but just lost his head near the end
The People's Hero Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 I thought our entire midfield looked pretty mediocre and ordinary. Hargreaves didn't stand out in anyway... not sure whether it's a good or bad thing? Certainly didn't have a shocker.. but I think saying he's had a great game might be overstating his contribution a little.

But he was involved and generally competent which is more than Beckham, Lampard, Carragher, Rooney and, of course Owen ever were.

martyn Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 The midfield looks mediocre because there is no genuine width or creativity. Hargreaves did his job very well, tidy distribution and harrassment of the opposition - all you can ask of the holding midfielder.

Wrong wrong wrong Joe Cole had a good game Stevie G made a difference when he came on ...and the rest of them made OH look like a MOTM! Well done OH, getting stuck in like a decent player should

Well done OH, getting stuck in like a decent player should Joe Cole did have a good game, that much is true. Unfortunately, one attacking midfielder out of the four midfielders on the pitch isn't enough. Steven Gerrard injected some energy but we still couldn't keep the ball could we? That midfield display as a whole, as well as the defensive work in patches and particularly from set pieces was indefensible. Shambolic. We scored two very good goals and were EXTREMELY lucky to come out of that game with a point.

martyn Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 Sweden only looked dangerous from set-pieces in all honesty, but it's worrying that a frailty like that was exposed tonight.

I'd include ANY ball in to our box. We're uncomfortable with balls in to the box. When our midfield collapses in to non-existence like today, the defence have no chance. It needs sorting though. Either work harder on stopping the balls coming in.. or preferably sort it out in terms of dealing with them when they do. Or both. My guess - neither will happen.
