unwarranted abusive replies

Recommended Posts

i was reading through some of the threads recently and some members seem to use unwarranted abusive replies or remarks if they disagree with a post, and have noticed that the members to whom it was aimed seemed quite put off and insulted , i'm very thick skinned and can disregard it but how do we report this sort of behaviour?

The people who can't hack it are usually those who come on and start spouting off themselves, then they sulk when they have to take a little back.

There's not a lot of regulars on here who will offer abuse for no reason.

As an example, some chap recently accused all those who don't rate Tiatto as being semi-literate chavs. I don't really see what either of these things have to do with the ability of an individual to form a reasoned, accurate and justifiable assessment of a player's worth. It was uncalled for and callous and he rightly received a little abuse.

It has been more of a problem on here in the past. I was often called a wan ker.. accused of not being a Leicester fan, being an idiot etc because I didn't agree that Levein was doing a good job. To some people, being a good supporter is putting on the blinkers, spending the money and toeing the club line. In my view, as supporters, where we're fed shit and kept in the dark, it's our duty to stand up and kick and scream. Also, where our club was being run down and threatened with entry in to a tier of football to which we have never previously sunk, why should I be accused of not being a true supporter just because I didn't sit back and accept it whilst clapping my hands and buying another yearly kit...

Sorry - went off track.

There SHOULD be a way of reporting abuse. In general however, I think the admin/mods do a decent job of closing the threads which stray way off topic and become nothing more than a slagging match.

I think internet forums are by their nature antagonistic and there will be always be arguments - it's just a case of weeding out the genuinely abusive and unnecessary comments from those that form part of a heated debate. The mods and admins seem to do a pretty good job in my opinion as I think it's important to keep censorship to a minimum.

I think it'd be handy to be able to close a topic yourself if you start it and then you think it gets out of hand due to misunderstandings. This might not be feasible obviously.

I also think there are some people who use their positions as perhaps more respected and literate posters to get away with insults that are far worse than a throwaway gesture of abuse such as calling someone a w**ker.

i'm sure the admin do a good job but just as an example, have a look at "post 48"page 5 on fosse designs leicester merchandise thread; this is the sort of thing i mean; i 'm not against banter between posters but this seems beyond that ; but i don't know if there is any history between them thats true

this is also true and the antagonistic nature of a forum is probably what makes it attractive inasmuch as views can be expressed without a very real threat of violence if one was to say the same thing in a pub; i'm not advocating cencorship of any views but just that the type of "**** of you w*nker type response can be quickly deleted by some form of request to admin ie stating post /page/thread number etc, they could then decide if it was abuse

Yes then I agree with that. If it's pure abuse and there is no actual substance to what the person is saying then it should be deleted as it serves no purpose whatsoever. Only problem being: some of the mods do that themselves....

I purposely avoid deleteing posts, usually limiting it to those I believe may cause the owner legal problems e.g pornographic material and even that is subjective.

As for the use of verbal invective I take the view that leaving it allows forum members to make their own judgement, in that they will either think it's justified or earned or they will see the poster as abusive either way that seems better than censoring which is a 50/50 solution at best. Otherwise we face the question 'why has my post been deleted' which was the basis of a massive debate on here recently.

I'm sure Mr C (beloved) has other legitimate admin/web management reasons for filtering out pointless posts but that is another debate.

I am a Mod on another forum and this is my take on things as well. ;)

I only snap back when provoked.

Should know better than to rattle my cage as the other person usually ends up looking stupid.

I doubt it, unless they happen to have a signature that is MORE than nine days out of date...

I don't mind someone calling me anything - but I think it would be good if the MOds could at least PM someone being a touch abusive with a reminder to calm it down a bit...

In the past, I personally have been subjected to unwarranted abuse on this forum, normally it has been deleted or I have PM'ed Mr C if Cobbo hasn't been about, but on another forum I use they have a 'report abuse' button. I dont find it hugely helpful as by the time the one mod that's on there gets to see it the damage has been done and this forum I use is quite vicious (thats why I read and dont post!)

This forum is well run and I think the mods/admin on here have enough common sense between them to see what's right and what's not and delete things fairly swiftly

My impression is that the mods use their common sense in allowing the free-est of debates compatible with the law as they interpret it and with common decency. Someone stating a strong point of view is bound to provoke a strong response from the "other side".

Like others, I don't think posters are generally impressed, nor do they take much notice of abusive namecallers Reasoned argument is a far stronger weapon but if someone feels irate enough to throw a few discourteous names about, so what. You can hardly expect otherwise on a broad based forum.

i don't think you can have a different set of values on a forum than you would in normal conversation; i've just witnessed the word nazi deleted from a thread on the viva italy thread aimed at germanns in general but posters get away with far worse on a personal level

for instance if someone called another member a paedophile or something then that member should be given an apology by the sender or stopped from posting.
