David Beckham - £75m(1/10)No surprises in the top slot, with Becks' fortune coming from his enduring worldwide fame and popularity, making him surely the most marketable sportsman in the world. His endorsements have included Brylcreem, Adidas, Vodafone, Gillette and Diesel, his books are best-sellers, and he's a fixture in glossy magazines.

Dennis Bergkamp - £37m(2/10)The flying Dutchman, who famously refuses to fly, has made his fortune from consistent long-term investments with decisions as shrewd and intelligent as his forward play.

Michael Owen - £30m(3/10)He may like a flutter on the horses, but on balance Owen has kept a level head when it has come to organising his finances. His clean-cut image makes him ideal to be the face of Persil and Lucozade.

Robbie Fowler - £28m(4/10)His playing career never quite lived up to its early promise but Fowler's 83-property portfolio has done remarkably well for him, and has spawned the terrace chant 'We all live in a Robbie Fowler house.'

Sol Campbell - £26m(5/10)England defender Campbell's wealth was boosted by negotiating his own free transfer between Spurs and Arsenal with the help of long-time agent Sky Andrew, a man who can make money fall from trees.

Roy Keane - £25m(6/10)The profits from Keano's controversial autobiography must have contributed hugely to the fortune of a man who has never been shy about making sure he gets whatever he is worth.

Rio Ferdinand - £20m(7/10)Hoping to rise up the list as 'brand Rio' takes effect, with video phone messages and a daft TV cash-in show the latest in a line of projects set to boost the forgetful defender's coffers.

Ryan Giggs - £20m(8/10)Giggsy may have missed out on a major international tournament but his glory years at Old Trafford have served him well, and as a youngster he was among the first to benefit from the Premiership's early marketing strategies.

Wayne Rooney - £20m and rising(9/10)The only way is up for Rooney's finances, having just signed a five-book publishing deal, and a multitude of endorsements are sure to follow any England success, metatarsals permitting. He and girlfriend Coleen also look set to usurp Posh and Becks as England's tabloid football royalty.

Thierry Henry - £18m(10/10)The words 'Va Va Voom' tell you much of the reason for Henry's position here, but it's not only Renault who see the advantages of using the charming and photogenic Frenchman to front a campaign. He has also just signed up to be the face of Reebok from August - defecting from rivals Nike.

Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Holland frontman is absent from our 'rich list' of footballers, despite his glittering career. But don't put your hands in your pockets just yet – he's still £17m to the good, and isn't quite down to his last Mercedes yet.

Well Done Robbie Fowler, he invested in property at the right time and has done well, all the others have generally made money for being great football players, Robbie has used his brain!!!

You'll probably find that many of them have invested wisely.

It's just that in Robbie's case he normally wouldn't be expected to be on the same list as all the other players mentioned as they've all had more lucrative football careers.

Scoring over 200 premeirship goals still isn't a bad footballing career though.

I'm very surprised Shearer isn't on that list.

I'm delighted for all of them ~ not for one moment do I think it is disgusting that such obscene amounts of money are being sucked out of the game by a privileged few to the detriment of clubs and fans across the country.

...yup, not for one minute.
