davieG Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 Steve McClaren has revealed he has decided who will replace David Beckham as England captain. Beckham announced after England's World Cup quarter final exit to Portugal that he would no longer be leading his country. New England coach McClaren has been considering the midfielder's successor, with John Terry and Steven Gerrard the leading contenders. Speaking from Amsterdam, where he is watching Manchester United in pre-season action, McClaren confirmed he has settled upon his captain. A public announcement will be made when the squad is named for the August 16 friendly with Greece, with McClaren outlining the qualities he expects from the new skipper. "I've made my choice," McClaren told Sky Sports 2. "You'll discover who that is next week. "It's been a very difficult choice because there are so many captains within the team and so many leaders in the team. "What I'm looking for is leadership on and off the field, a good communicator and someone who is well respected by the players. "There are quite a few candidates. I want someone who can relate and communicate with myself, and put my ideas over and execute them on the field, and take that responsibility. "All in all, I'm not looking at one captain, but I'm looking at 11 captains when we play." McClaren has yet to decide whether Wayne Rooney will be in his squad for the game with Greece, as the striker is suspended for the start of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Rooney has put in his application for the captain's job as the new England chief explained his immediate intentions. He added: "You'll have to wait and see on that (Rooney's inclusion). I'm looking at everybody involved in England next week, not just in the short term, but the medium and long term. "Rooney is invaluable to the squad. I got on well with him yesterday and he put himself forward as captain as he normally would do. "I want to instil a bit of belief and confidence back into the team and give the fans a team to be proud of."
Stevosevic Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 no reason why he shouldnt, easily one of the top 3 candidates.
Alexikokopops Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 no reason why he shouldnt, easily one of the top 3 candidates. Rooney one of the top 3 candidates? You are kidding, right?
Bert Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 It should be Terry - but everyone think's Rooney is our best player, so who better for the players to look up to, than our "best player".

If you want the England team to look up to and be lead by an immature liability who likes to get himself sent off because he's getting a little fustrated then yes, go for Rooney. If you want somebody who can actually lead the team with a bit of maturity and discipline, who'll get down to the business when things aren't going quite their way rather than stamping on someone's bollocks, and who does in fact lead by example then go for Gerrard or Terry, who've actually captained their club teams to honours in the past couple of seasons and know what they're doing. But we're both agreed it should be Terry, so that's grand

You are kidding, right? yes he is one of the top 3 candidates, who are the other options? owen - a joke that he was vice captain rio - no lampard - no j.cole - no a.cole - no neville - may lose his place terry + gerrard are obviously the best candidates, but Rooney is probably 3rd choice.

Not forgetting that he is the new talisman of English football and thus perfect for the sponsors. Not to suggest the FA is run by men after the money

What are you on?? Neville will not lose his place, one of the best Right Backs we have ever had, the best right back England has atm.
dandannieldanok Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 McClaren cannot consider Rooney at all. His temperament is terrible and will only lead the other players to follow him for an early bath.
Stevosevic Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 What are you on?? Neville will not lose his place, one of the best Right Backs we have ever had, the best right back England has atm. i dont disagree, but most international managers prefer a long term captain.
Guest Gist Posted 5 August 2006 Posted 5 August 2006 Rooney would be a very silly choice IMO yes he is a talented player but not a leader like Terry who should be given it or Gerrard, if he was given the armband he might start performing better for England.

Rooney is an immature liability. As captain I'd want someone I can rely on, not someone who's going to get sent off just because he's a little fustrated, I'd chose Neville over him anyday. Neville losing his place? Yes, Luke Young is seriously challenging him.
SydneyFC Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Rooney is too young, i'd put Ferdinand before Rooney.

Ultra Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Rooney would be a VERY strange choice, especially as he's banned for the first two Euro 2008 qualifiers. McClaren should stop faffing about and announce JT as captain.
