Car Trouble

My car broke down nearly two weeks ago now. I had it towed to the garage (after ringing the RAC 3 times. They were actually surprisingly good!).

Having been quoted £540 for a new gearbox and informed of the need for a new clutch as well, I decided to at least go for a second-hand gearbox. After exhaustive internet searches, I found one for £100 which however never arrived. (Three days later than the delivery day they had given me, they admitted that the courier had dropped the parcel and broken the gearbox). So I bought a new gearbox for about the same price from another car spares shop. By the time the garage got the gearbox, 10 days had gone by! (and I had lost one contract)

Anyway, last Saturday the garage guy rings me to let me know that - when it came to fitting the new gearbox - the exhaust fell apart, so they had to replace it. Total bill: £450 :(

The good thing is: I got my car back yesterday. The bad thing is that the exhaust is very noisy. When I pointed this out to the mechanic, he looked at me as if thinking "you are being rather picky (it is running after all...)" but only said "bring it back when you have 20 minutes and I'll fix it". As it is really rather bad (and I don't fancy replacing the exhaust within a few months' time), I took it back this morning and - nearly one hour later - I left with a just slightly less noisy exhaust.

I rang them again to let them know I am not very impressed. :( The guy said I can just pop back anytime, I don't need to ring him.

- Is this normal?

- Do they do this only to female customers?

- Are they plainly taking the m*ck?

- Are they simply wasting my time?

- Is there anything I can do to get them to fix this properly?

- Is there any point in taking the car back again? He is just going to hit the exhaust a few times and then return the car back to me. A few more hits and soon my car will need a new exhaust!

- Can I sue them for incompetence?

I am running out of patience!!!!!!!!:mad::mad:

- Is this normal? Yes - it's a mechanic thing

- Do they do this only to female customers? no, everyone that looks like they won't put up much of a fight will get it

- Are they plainly taking the m*ck? quite probably

- Are they simply wasting my time? no, they're not wasting your time, they're trying to waste your bank balance

- Is there anything I can do to get them to fix this properly? if your current bloke doesn't fix the noise, take it elsewhere, and never use the other guy again

- Is there any point in taking the car back again? He is just going to hit the exhaust a few times and then return the car back to me. A few more hits and soon my car will need a new exhaust! yes, if he thinks he can fix it, give it a try. You'll soon find out what he's all about... be sure he doesn't charge you to fix the exhaust he installed himself.

- Can I sue them for incompetence? if only it were that simple

I am running out of patience!!!!!!!!:mad::mad:

I feel for you, you're being given the run around by the guy

You should name and shame the garage, that is what they do on some of the motorbike forums, this way they will lose trade until they buck their ideas up........

- Is this normal? in some bigger garages, yes

- Do they do this only to female customers? no, they think that nobody, but them, knows about cars

- Are they plainly taking the m*ck? probably

- Are they simply wasting my time? probably

- Is there anything I can do to get them to fix this properly?get under the car, with the engine running and (befor the exhaust get s to hot) feel for areas (around joints) where it is blowing. patch up with exhaust 'gun gum' check all of the rubber bushes are in place too.

- Is there any point in taking the car back again? He is just going to hit the exhaust a few times and then return the car back to me. A few more hits and soon my car will need a new exhaust! i'd never go back and ell the so in writing

- Can I sue them for incompetence? sadly i doubt it, lisa is a high-flying lawyer, she'll know............

I am running out of patience!!!!!!!!:mad::mad:chill

Formula One are buggers for messing people around. Go in for a new exhaust, only to be told that your shocks have had it. Tell them you will sort it at a later date, and they will change them anyway, citing that they couldn't let you go out with them in that state, health and safety and all that jive. Had I known at the time that legally I could drive away without paying for the new shocks, I would have done, but seeing as I had a very important match to attend, I begrudgingly paid up.

Lets get it clear though, I told them exactly what I thought. :@ And I warned them that I would tell all and sundry about this. Funnily, I'm not the only person that they've done this too, and they don't just pick on women either. Fecking crooks.

As the clutch and gearbox had given up , it can be assumed that the car is either quite old or being driven quite badly so either case it is not surprising that the exhaust is also in a bad way.

Sorry but i don't think you are a victim just because you are female but just the owner of a car that is falling apart because of age or ill treatment.

Roy Hubbard in Market Harborough charged my girlfriend over £220 for replacing the front suspension arms on her Ford KA, when she got back i phoned Ford direct and they quoted £180 using original Ford parts.......... My car was in at the same time as it was running funny they ended up doing an oil change and shafting me for £120 (which didnt fix the problem)....... Robbing b*stards !!!!!

I made them wait six months before i paid though

Cisono,

Just hearing your story has enfuriarated me, it's not fair that such people should try and rip people off and get away with it.

You could try and complaim through citizen advice bureau, or comsumer direct:

It is time consuming but if someone has to take a stand!!!!

I don't think you understand... I am complaining about:

- the hard time just getting the car and parts (probably was unlucky), but mostly:

- the fact that they cannot seem to fix the BRAND NEW exhaust properly so that it doesn't knock on the side. If I leave it the way they have, I will certainly have to replace the new exhaust again soon!

And I don't think I drive any worse than you do!

my you are touchy sorry :( i've just read it again and yes i see what you mean about the exhaust

but surely the gearbox did not pack up without any warning signs or noises did it ? they don't normally pack up without giving some tell-tale noises first,( twenty years in the trade tells me a gearbox doesn't do that) so had the car been serviced etc and if there were any preliminary warning signs what action did you take?

and the time factor was mostly your own and the couriors fault not the garages who were probably quite irritated to have had your car around the place in bits ( for 10 days or so at their inconvenience) when they could have fitted a box earlier.

you probably got on the wrong side of the garage staff by going it alone with a second hand box

and driving a car is not just about the actual driving , its knowing when there may be problems on the way. and how to minimise the bad effects

Just seeing your spelling has infuriated me.

i've just read it again and yes i see what you mean about the exhaust

And with all your experience in the trade, I'd be interested to know whether you think they should have been able to secure the new exhaust properly by now? (I spent one hour there yesterday, after they failed to fit it properly the first time round)

What has this got to do with my complaint at hand?

But yes, my mechanic had signalled this to me (and explained that a small hole in it had been patched up) but simply said to watch out for it (which I did). In June, I noticed an increase in the noisiness and later on some other signs. I rang my usual mechanic, but he was unavailable for a while. He was about to move to new premises and was hoping my car would hold long enough for him to fix it after he had moved in. When the gearbox finally did pack up, I got the car to a supposedly good garage and found the best replacement gearbox I could afford at the time). What more do you expect me to do? I am not married to my car!

"Fault"? (do you work for that garage incidentally? :P )

The spare parts shop was also at fault for not investigating why my parcel had not arrived on time for the first 48 hours.

I agree that the garage themselves could not have done anything about fixing my car earlier, but it was ready on Saturday morning and they only told me so only 15 minutes before closing down time (noonish on Saturday), so that it was too late for me to get it in time for the weekend. I only got it back on Monday and even then, as we know, all was not well with it.

I had talked to the owner about keeping the bill down so it was him who suggested a second-hand gearbox but said they were very busy and it may take some time. So I spent two days looking for one. I kept them informed about the progress with this purchase (ups and downs). My car was out of the way, in their car park (and they did not touch my car) until they finally got the gearbox ...

you probably got on the wrong side of the garage staff by going it alone with a second hand box

It didn't look that way. I told them openly that I could not afford a new one and the owner told me he was relieved when I found one myself, as he did not have time. He even told me the price I got for it was better than he could have got for me in Leicester.

and driving a car is not just about the actual driving , its knowing when there may be problems on the way. and how to minimise the bad effects

yes but... within the various constraints of your life (so to speak). Had I had unlimited cash at my disposal (or another car to use in the meantime), I might have replaced the gearbox earlier. But as this was not the case...

All I want to know now is: what do I do about my new but noisy exhaust? It has not been fitted properly and I get the feeling that they (or at least the sarchastic guy who has been working on it) have no clue how to fix this...

basically your only complaint with the "garage" that did the job is that the new exhaust is noisy , and i agree with you it should and must be put right but the rest of your complaints are to do with your own need to cut costs and not taking preventative measures beforehand and this is not the fault of the garage where the work was done . Maybe you don't have the unlimited funds to keep your car as roadworthy as you should but this is not the fault of the garage either is it?

Had you have had the work done on the first estimate your car would have been fixed at least 10 days earlier and maybe you would not have lost the contract , so it sounds very much like false economy to me. I'm sorry if i sound a little harsh but it sounds as though your problem for the most part has been self inflicted. I know there was a problem with the courier but the "garage" cannot be blamed for that. So who would you sue ?

A man would have been treated just the same and so what are you intending to sue the garage for ?....just a poorly fitted exhaust, the rest of your complaints are irrelevant as the garage did not have say in what you decided to do.
