lookwhaticando Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Gallas 'issued own-goal threat'Chelsea say they sold William Gallas because he threatened to score an own goal if he was selected for their first game of the season. he Stamford Bridge club have released a statement explaining their reasons for allowing the French defender to join Arsenal on transfer deadline day. Gallas, 29, allegedly refused to play again for the Blues. Chelsea claim he said he would score an own goal if he was forced to play against Manchester City on 20 August. The statement says Gallas initially refused to play against Liverpool in last season's FA Cup semi-final and that, if selected to play against City, he threatened to score an own goal, get sent off or make deliberate mistakes. Gallas was heavily criticised by Blues boss Jose Mourinho earlier in the summer when he failed to report for pre-season training on Chelsea' pre-season tour of America. The French defender eventually joined the Gunners in a cash-plus-player exchange deal for Ashley Cole. The full club statmement read: "Chelsea believes it is important for our supporters to be made aware of the full facts regarding William Gallas and the lack of respect he showed to the fans, the manager and the club. "Despite leaving he continues to attack José Mourinho and this cannot be left unchallenged. "Chelsea made William Gallas a very substantial and attractive new contract offer to stay towards the end of last season. This was rejected. "The issue was purely one of money, despite his public comments that he wanted a new challenge, to play abroad and so forth. These were just a smokescreen to cover up the fact he was hawking himself to the highest bidder. "Having failed to secure his demands, his position became increasingly intransigent and unacceptable. "He initially refused to play against Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final last season in an effort to force an increased contract offer. "As is now well documented he refused to join up with the team in Los Angeles during pre-season, despite agreeing the dates for his return as the other World Cup players did, with the club. "When Jose Mourinho generously offered him a way back into the 'family' after the American tour, this was thrown back in the Chelsea manager's face. "The manager told him that, even if he did not agree a new contract but returned to the "family" and abided by the rules, he would still select the best players available and would not punish him playing wise. "However despite meetings to try and resolve the problems Gallas made it clear to Jose Mourinho he would never play for Chelsea again. "Before the first game of the season against Manchester City, when only four defenders were available and John Terry was doubtful with an injury, he refused to play. "He went on to threaten that if he was forced to play, or if he was disciplined and financially punished for his breach of the rules, that he could score an own goal or get himself sent off, or make deliberate mistakes. "Clearly this was a totally unacceptable situation for the manager, the team and the club. So a collectively agreed solution in Chelsea's interests had to be found, hence his departure. "Chelsea has a wage structure in place that is valued not only on the contribution of the player to the manager and the team, but also on a player's respect for the club and contribution to the promotion and image of the club off the field. Every player is expected to play their part in this. "William Gallas rarely recognised these responsibilities. "He also failed to recognise the role Jose Mourinho and Chelsea played in helping him become a double Premiership champion for a player whose only league title prior to that had been in the French Second Division." Gallas has not responded to Chelsea's claims but when he initially told the Blues in May that he wanted to leave, he said it was because he wanted to "experience another league" and that his request was "not a question of money". BBC Sport To threaten an own goal is quite funny, yet quite silly at the same time. Thoughts?

OBO Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 It seems like a pretty stupid, childish thing to say, although I think the story needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as I wouldn't say it's unlikely that Chelsea are making mountains out of molehills here...

Pretty funny that grown men act like children in a playground though really. Wenger has got a right one on his hands if Gallas acts like this everytime something doesn't go his way. He couldn't handle Anelka could he?? (Shouldn't this thread be merged with the other one the same as this?? And just as I press post it is )
Daggers Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Great minds eh Shum, lookwhaticando? Sorry Shum, you were a couple of minutes late I am left with a very funny feeling about Chelsea's announcement...smacks of a total lack of professionalism. Did Man Utd slag off Stam? RVN? No. Chelsea's actions are those of a petulant little boy in the playground, eager to have the last word. Maybe Gallas did say that, but we know players have been holding clubs to account ever since they could. Gallas may have acted in a shitty manner...but so have Chelsea and their silly little man of a manager.

Mourinho is annoying, he always moans and accuses everybody other than his club, his players and himself. He acts in a silly manner everytime he can, always trying to get the last word in. Seems to be rubbing off on the P.R department at Stamford Bridge. I find what Gallas did as unprofessional also, but I jus view that as a little funny all the same. Moderator material if ever I saw it If moderating material is what you thought, I won't argue with you Not agreed with you a lot today either.. Who knows what the future holds??

Nationwider Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Frank Sinclair and Jimmy Willis made similar threats against MON and Brian Little. No-one took them seriously until it was too late.
C-man Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 If its true, he should get the fock out of this country because thats the most selfish thing i've ever heard from a footballer. Having said that, i can't help but think Chelsea are lying.
davieG Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 You reap what you sow, Chelsea have reinforced all that is bad about football with their recent activities so now they get the children they deserve. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see the whole sesspit that is the Premier League collapse and disappear up its own backside. I've even got to the stage where I'm not that fussed about getting promoted as it brings nothing but misery, disenchantment and financial meltdown for lots of clubs that do..

Agree I've often touted that idea, but it never seemed very popular.
Jay Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 I am not sure what to believe here but I tend to lean towards the fact the Chelsea have no integrity and have probably just said this to have to the last word they are a bitter club and probably just want to try and ruin the start Gallas has at Arsenal because he had the audacity to want to leave them!! Chelsea have no Morales and under Abramovich as they have proved time and time again and the thing that sums it up is part of Gallas statement "Even if Chelsea has much money, its new leaders lack class."
Daggers Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 You reap what you sow, Chelsea have reinforced all that is bad about football with their recent activities so now they get the children they deserve. Maybe we need the football equivalent of an ASBO ~ banning anyone from Chelsea being within 12 foot of a microphone or a reporter. Agree I've often touted that idea, but it never seemed very popular. Gets my vote
Stuliasz Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Did make me laugh I have to say. However as someone else said it is incredibly unprofessional and another example of player power. If he had have been selected and had scored an own goal, would he have been subject to disciplinary proceedings from any other authority I wonder? Surely it would be a case of bringing the game into disrepute or something similar.
Manwell Pablo Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 The bit where Chelsea claim it was all about money is what gets me. I doubt Arsenal have offered him significantly more in wages then Chelsea "very attractive offer." I find it very hard to believe any this, the Chelski PR machine seems to come out with a lot of stuff I find myself questioning.
golden gordon Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Agree I've often touted that idea, but it never seemed very popular. perhaps you were ten years ahead of your time
Daggers Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Gallas denies claims... yawn Angry...but not suing them for defamation though. Hmm...
davieG Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Angry...but not suing them for defamation though. Hmm... Because judges are apt to only award miniscule sums in cases like this and the expenses are almost as much as a weeks wages for him

Thracian Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 I don't think Gallas has ever read much or seen much television footage about Roman Abramovich. Because while Abramovich is regarded as a benevolent man in some parts, you don't achieve what he's managed at such a young age and in a place like Russia by taking kindly to threats and by being easily pressured or made a fool of.
Daggers Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 you don't achieve what he's managed at such a young age and in a place like Russia ... by being ... made a fool of. Someone should've told the Grauniad...
