What about the lads social skills? I'm not having a go, just genuinely interested, but kids that hang around with their parents all the time (and children to 'older' parents) tend to have problems communicating with their peers. Hanging around with his parents. He's spent 5-7 weeks of the last three summers (aged 16-19) travelling to America on his own and touring with various friends from California across to Colorado, through New Mexico and on to Texas, latterly driving a sizeable motor home while he was at it. He couldn't have done that while lacking social skills which has never been a problem with his being a member of a golf club, snooker club, acting group, music group, a five-a-side football team and martial arts club. The most important benefit has been his being able to retain the individualism which allows him to think for himself and to act on those thoughts. In truth it was the making of him and on reflection I am more than pleased he went down that route although it is clearly not for everyone.

It seems as though in society today, only white people are branded as "racist", the rest just as misunderstood, a bit angry at previous treatment or just controversial, Abu Hamza being a prime example. If a black male and a white male had a fight and the black male came off worse-for-wear, it'd be brandished a racially-motivated assault, yet if the white male was worse, it'd be classed as common assault or something similar. When gangs of youths of Asian, West-Indian or African origin terrorise people in the street, attack them, harass them, steal things from them etc, they aren't called racist, but if a white gang terrorise a person from an ethnic background, then they are racist also. I have even heard of schools having to cancel the Nativity Play at Christmas time because it is classed as "racist, unfair and offensive" to none Christians, yet black history month and Friday Prayers for Muslims, Diwali and Eid all are major events in the school academic year, not classed as at all offensive to anybody they do not apply to. I have absolutely no problem with Asian, African or West-Indian people, as I know many and have been friends with them for a while, even have coloured people in parts of my family, but some of the points raised in posts before this one, and in that email posted by Suffolk Fox really, really irritate me. People can stand in parks preaching hate against non-muslim people. People can openly call white-people racist if they do not get their own way all the time. People openly campaign and get praised for trying to promote equality in everything for ethnic people. What if I, or somebody else, was to go out and campaign for White history month, claim to be proud that I am white, or campaign for white people to be treated fairly these days in society?? I would be called a nutter, an embarassment, a drug addict, or a member of the NF/BNP.

I'm going to make no attempt to give a road map to cultural peace and harmony but I would argue that there isn't large scale inter-racial unrest and suspicion...I think this is a fiction trotted out by the Mail/Express/Sun/Star and News of the World to serve a political end. It panders to the sentiments of the far-right and is not borne out by my experience of living in Birmingham. Yes, in some communities tensions exist due to the idiotic actions of people on both sides of the divide. I'll quote Voltaire “The only way to comprehend what mathematicians mean by Infinity is to contemplate the extent of human stupidity.†In my experience, kids are born culturally blind...they see no divides. It is their parents that foist their bigotry upon them. Well said. The author is trying to justify their use with the spurious allegation that there exist offensive terms for white people that are used in common parlance. What a load of cock! American ghetto's are dangerous places because of chronic underfunding - be they black, hispanic or white ghetto's. The inference in the post that ghetto's are endemically 'black' places demonstrates the blinkered vision of the author! The lag over from apartheid in the States is still very real and pervasive, this piece of crap just emphasizes it.

Did he take GCSE's and A-levels or did he opt out of the examination process? What was it about the state system that made you to opt out? I take it from your comment that you believe people sacrifice their individuality by going to school, is that right?

It isn't a polite description - but it equates to the English use of 'Chav'. I'm happy to be pulled up for being rude, that was my intention, towards the anonymous author of the piece ... but not racist.
