I was watching a Chris Rock stand up routine on sky the other day. The use of the word nigger was amazing, I lost count. What I found the most interesting was how many times he used words like cracker etc to describe white people.

All I could think was if a white guy was on stage doing the same routine he wouldn't have been allowed on tv, probably would have been arrested on grounds of racism.

spot on

Hmmm that has already been suggested on here many a time, but there is always somebody who wants to put a counter-argument forward to dismiss it and believe 100% that they have the right idea. Maybe there are different laws for different people nowadays :whistle:

I was just using the word 'gay' as an example how words can sometimes be attached to groups of people. It is true the homosexual community haven taken the word for themselves. It's not the word that is offensive but how it's used.

Saw a film the other night. It was about a group of people lost in some hills in the American outback. They were stalked by a family of canabalistic maniacs. I thought are all people that live in the hills homicidal maniacs? First we had Deliverance then the one above.

Off the point but its easy to label groups in a stereotype way. It wasn't a bad film though. :D

It really does seem that only the white people in our population can be classed as racist which is funny because im sure asians can be racist as well....

Back when i was 17 years old i was out in town getting lewgless as you do at that age, well I decided to get a taxi home and it had a couple of asian lads in it, but they said they were friends of the driver and that they would drop me off before they went home, well they dropped me off in a back street where they also decided to put their nice big boots into my head and other areas, whilst also stealing everythingt i had on me.

This in itself didnt annoy me that much, ive been beat up before, what really annoyed me was their reason, which one of them happened to tell me, nice guy, I was white!

Love it i get beat up for being a white guy in England!!!!!!

Fcuking Brilliant!

And im still missing two teeth from tha day, yet I still like asians as long as they dont gang up on me and smash me up!

Every faith, culture, country, basically anyone can be a racist, the fact that majority of the people in the UK are white, racism against a minority is far more reported and is socially more unacceptable etc. I would say asians, blacks etc are no more racist then whites, the fact that ethnic minorities are more likely to get away with it though!!

It's a sad story, beating someone up because of colour, which I also know from experience, i'm afraid there are just some people that are bigots etc

No-one ever gets properly offended by that though, they just stand at the back with their hands half-raised saying "erm..." because they're too worried to speak out about black people too loudly. If it bothered anyone that much then they'd make a proper fuss about it.

In my opinion though, it's not the same thing. It's a bit different when your race has been seen as socially inferior for a large period of history and it becomes socially acceptable to use a derogatory term about you. Chris Rock for example is just surfing the crest of a wave where a black person can finally host the Oscars without the Western world crumbling at the prospect and using this to take a little bit of the power back.

It's like the term 'paki', to asians a 'paki' is a pakistani, hence sikhs etc call pakistani's paki and pakistani's call themselves 'paki' and that is accpetable but for anyone else ie non asian, it's seen as racism to call any asain 'paki', that's because of the derogatory nature and intent the word was used!!

Had no problem with the word when taking Spanish lessons. As you say the word is now used in a derogatory fashion. A lot of the origional settlers in America were Spanish so it was obvious the word would be used when talking about a non-white person. Don't know where 'nigger' comes from but at a gues I wonder whether it originates from the African (broadly speakin) word meaning black when slave-trading was the norm or a word the 'slaves' used themselves when first hearing the word 'negro'

You can't really ban all words that may be used in a derogatory way but there has to be a restriction on how the word is used.

I remember when Till death Do Us Part. was first on. Alf Garnett was a bigot and a racist of the highest order but I do not believe it was ever Johnny Speight's (writer) intention for the programme to be racist. In fact I remember him saying on more than one occasion that Alf G was the one that came off worst in arguments. His viewpoints were that ridiculous that he (JS) did not expect anyone to agree with him. That was fine when it came to the above average intellegent person. They could see the cleverness in the writing, but it was at it's height at the time of Enoch Powell and his speeches. Convertsation in the pubs went 'He's right aint he u see it all the time.' AG was not just a racist and a bigot though he was anti everything and treated his wife as a slave and no amount of reasoning could change his views which were proven to be flawed every episode.

"It's not safe naaa to walk down yer own street and it's yer bloody coons en it, yer bloody coons are the trouble. Yer can't see em in the daaaark! Mind yer we've got that Clyde Best. He only scores in winter when yer can't see im..."

Just harmless and incredibly funny.

I played golf the other day with two West Indian friends and they had me in stitches with a whole series of jokes taking the piss - out of West Indians!.

my other half's family have once or twice told her not to be with me as i am a no good white boy, any insults towards me (although i do not invite them by saying this, so please don't bother) just fly by as i don't honestly care. but after hearing it a few times it does make me wonder if one of my family decided to announce their disapproval at me being with her in the same manner would result in a very unpleasant response.

recently i was made aware of a woman who kicked off as her child had been made to play the part of a monkey in a play (where nearly all children were monkeys) and with him being black she found it offensive........i'm sorry but who was racist in that incident? the school or the woman? if the school had said he couldnt be one as it could cause offence would surely imply that they accept black people as being similar to monkeys.

Ow a right hot potato of a thread,.... also in response to this story, the two lads actually volunteered to be the monkeys I seem to remember... then again any school in their right mind would perhaps have consulted them on other roles and perhaps discussed the perceived racial issue with the parents?

its a dodgy subject as if the school had contacted them one of the parents could have turned round and said "are you comparing us to monkeys" but in not doing so they are accused of comparing them to monkeys......depending on the parents its a lose-lose situation for the school

My favourite type of threads also!!

COmmon sense, comes to mind!! If there was an issue regarding the kids being monkeys, the parents should have discussed it with the school and resolved such issues, using common sense, overreacting to such issues doesn't help, and I think everyone should have taken the time to discuss and take everything into perspective!!

In saying that, I wouldn't like my kids to be told that they are monkies in a play, but i'm sure after discussing the issue and after seeing the big picture I wouldn't have a problem!!

yeah but you could call the parents and say that her two kids have asked to play monkeys, and allude to the fact that "some people" may call into question the school's casting?

I think Headteachers are diplomatic enough to cope with that one.

I don't know being a monkey sounds like you could have a lot of fun, certainly better than being a statue or a donkey which was my honour at school.

If the schools had to consult parents on all these sorts of issues, these days there seems to be someone who will find fault with every aspect of teaching then no teaching would ever occur, people are far too temperamental in my opinion.

I know mate, I did read your post!!!! :P

I just made a point of what I would do, which would be one of over-reaction, but as stated I would have enough common sense to discuss the issue before making accusations of racism

But, obviously if my kids say they want to play monkeys, I would say ..'what do you mean you want to play monkeys, you already are!!!!'

Yes your right big G, but as a concerned parent I would not like anyone or anything to take advantage of my kids. I'm afraid i'm in the generation of 'protectorate' parents whereby my kids get 'molcoddled', can't fall over, can't walk the strees in fear of what's abd out there, can't anything because it may have germs etc!!!!!

P.S. Pakistanis are awesome, every one I've worked with has been a pisser. Sri Lankans kick arse too, for the record.

'paki' in the Britain, is a term to describe anyone who's brown\asian, it is a derigatory remark, used as a curse!!!

Paki actually means clean\pure, hence Pakistani's aborad (non UK) don't mind the remark!!

I was gonna say, pakis call themselves pakis so how is it offensive!

Reminds me of this Maddox article, funny stuff:

First of all, the label "African American" is the dumbest, most persistently used phrase in our vernacular. Every time you call someone an "African American," you're making at least two assumptions about the person:

1. That the person is an American. For example, if you saw this guy walking along on a street, you would probably think: AFRICAN AMERICAN lol!

...which is fine, except for one small detail: this man is British, which makes you a presumptuous cock.

:o oh dear, rod and back spring to mind.... Ive only EVER let the Janxlet in once and he was particularly poorly and needed the comfort, when he was about 1.

Its a rocky road matey...

you may NEVER get rid of em!

Do what the "SUPERNANNY" did, just keep taking them back without talking to them and tucking them in, it may take 100 times a night and much tears, but apparently it works...
