The People's Hero Posted 7 September 2006 Posted 7 September 2006 Read an article while out in Italy... Italian trains now run more on time than Swiss trains! But of course if you could get this to happen in England... now, that would be something! You should check out standupandsing's website. Trainalicious baby.

golden gordon Posted 8 September 2006 Author Posted 8 September 2006 I did not call everyone that lived in a trailer 'white trash', just the author of the ridiculous article. white trash is not a universally accepted term of abuse in the South, at least not with the people I know. If Crazy Horse considers himself personally offended by the term then he should say so rather than wrongly labelling people bigots, and attempt to defend the underprivileged of America. I would just like to remind CH that the rules of the forum forbid the use of personal insults in posts. I have not deleted them as they are aimed at me, I have broad shoulders. Please do not insult other members of FoxesTalk CH. 1 you used the term dumb white hick trailer trash and although this was aimed at an anonymous author it is an all embracing phrase directed at a group of people , for instance if someone read a speech by a "malcolm x type" and described it as being written by dumb black ghetto trash , i'm sure you could see it would be offensive to a whole community 2 of course the phrase white trash is not univesally acceptable and most certainly is considered offensive , that is what both he and i have been saying ad nauseum , it was you and others who maintained that it was a commonly accepted phrase ( or was the wikipeadia link posted explaining not enough) i can only assume that the people that you have met that don't consider it offensive are not the ones to whom it is aimed , but rather the type that would use such disgusting terminology 3 i believe he did say that he was personally offended and asked for an apology for an insult ( intentional or otherwise) and the only response he got from you was a lot of silly smileys and further insults directed at a group of people that he considered close to and you appeared (intentionally or not} to relish being described thus in your attitudes towards that group of people. no apology came to my recollection and i've just checked the thread and cannot find one but can find the request for one ( please see post 55 for statement saying how insulted he felt and request for apology, i suggest you read this post thouroughly) if i am told that i have insulted someone or group of people by the use of a phrase ( intentional or otherwise) i would not hesitate in giving an apology and it is this that makes me sad on this occasion
Rincewind Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 There have been many words and phrases over the years that are now considere offensive either to individuals or groups. When I worked in the hosiery there was a shade of brown called 'nigger' No-one in the trade as far as I knew directly thought of a dark-skinned person every time they handled a pair of socks. But over the years certain people did use the word in a derogatory many thus changing the whole context. I saw an Austrailian film a few months back and the title was The something wog. The word was used througout the film and it appeared the meaning in Austrailia means a poor person on the dole. Again it was used in the wrong way and then became a common term. Gay is another word. It was just a word to describe the state of being happy and content or a person that lived a happy life. Why it was then associated with homsexiuals I dont know. As for the one being used 'White Trailor trash' Trash is bad enough. Trailor trash labels anyone living in trailers as inferior and white I suppose is because of the area it stems from are more populated by whites. all three words together is not nice. But then again there are some terms for people that live in and travel by caravan rather than in a static home that are not nice. And they have been posted on here. Because no-one objected or said they felt personally insulted they were accepted. They are much the same as the 'triler' people preferring to live as they do in some cases. As in all society there are bad eggs. This leads to jealosy, resentment and fear from people who then label these groups as all the same. This goes for all types as stereotyping and the ones doing it will rarely see it as wrong having grown up in a enviroment where it is common. That's all gotta eat before the match restarts.

But over the years certain people did use the word in a derogatory many thus changing the whole context. Tell me about it... Talking about black issues, I made a faux pas last year. When I lived in Italy (and admittedly there was only one black woman living in the region), the commonest word to describe a black guy was "negro" (probably derived from the Spanish word for "black"). Last year, while talking to my sister, I referred to a friend as being "negro". She looked at me really badly as if I had been swearing. When I protested my innocence, she finally explained that in Italy you now have to say "nero" (Italian word for black), as (the previously used word) "negro" has come to be seen as a derogatory word. All within the space of a few years... amazing how languages evolve and rather quickly too!
Rincewind Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Had no problem with the word when taking Spanish lessons. As you say the word is now used in a derogatory fashion. A lot of the origional settlers in America were Spanish so it was obvious the word would be used when talking about a non-white person. Don't know where 'nigger' comes from but at a gues I wonder whether it originates from the African (broadly speakin) word meaning black when slave-trading was the norm or a word the 'slaves' used themselves when first hearing the word 'negro' You can't really ban all words that may be used in a derogatory way but there has to be a restriction on how the word is used. I remember when Till death Do Us Part. was first on. Alf Garnett was a bigot and a racist of the highest order but I do not believe it was ever Johnny Speight's (writer) intention for the programme to be racist. In fact I remember him saying on more than one occasion that Alf G was the one that came off worst in arguments. His viewpoints were that ridiculous that he (JS) did not expect anyone to agree with him. That was fine when it came to the above average intellegent person. They could see the cleverness in the writing, but it was at it's height at the time of Enoch Powell and his speeches. Convertsation in the pubs went 'He's right aint he u see it all the time.' AG was not just a racist and a bigot though he was anti everything and treated his wife as a slave and no amount of reasoning could change his views which were proven to be flawed every episode.
The People's Hero Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 Negro just means 'black' (masculine form) in Spanish. As Cisono correctly says, the problem comes when negative connotations become attached to the word rather than the 'literal' meaning of the word itself. I have to quibble part of your post Hop about the word gay. The word has taken on an extra meaning over the years, but you included it in a paragraph with words like nigger, trailer trash, wog... all of those are offensive, they are derogatory in some way. Gay is not derogatory, it simply means homosexual.
lcfc_jme Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 gay is just deemed offensive as it is used as an insult to many homosexual people in the world. And seeing as they are so touchy, it hits the spot
lcfc_jme Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 good use of spanish though to prove the point

Gay developed from the strapline "good as you" which was adopted by homosexuals in Califrnia as early as the 1930's according to a TV programme I watched.
Babylon Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 Gay is not derogatory, it simply means homosexual. Gay actaully means - "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy. That was the original meaning of the word, it was then used as a term by hetrosexuals to describe homosexuals. They then embraced the word, I doubt it's deemed offensive any more. I think anyone... that's what some bloke on TV said anyway haha.
The People's Hero Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 i'm glad you include "trailer trash" as being offensive......another mod on here (DB) seems to think otherwise and maintains it's worn as a sort of badge of honour The last thing I want to do is get in to the sort of argument where neither side is going to back down. I would consider that the argument should now be concluded with an 'agree to disagree' approach. My view, for what it's worth, is that phrases like 'white trailer trash' are offensive, just as 'yellow trailer trash' or 'black trailer trash' would be. I'm not completely innocent in terms of labelling and stereotyping though, I'm constantly slagging off 'pikeys' and blame them for a lot of things.

Queer might be seen as offensive and then there are a whole host of other derogatory phrases which I'm sure we've all heard from time to time. Gay isn't offensive though, gay men might describe themselves as gay (or sometimes even queer although I think that's more in fun)

Babylon Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 Gay isn't offensive though, gay men might describe themselves as gay (or sometimes even queer although I think that's more in fun) When you have things like gay pride and queer eye for the straight guy setup by homosexuals I thnks it's fair to say 99% don't find it offensive. Some moaning git out there will that's nature.
The People's Hero Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 Sounds a bit like how the gangster rap scene seized control of the offensive word Nigger and adopted it as their own? Perhaps so. I don't know... didn't really want to get involved in this as it's a touchy subject and I'm bound to step on somebody's toes sooner or later.
Babylon Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 Sounds a bit like how the gangster rap scene seized control of the offensive word Nigger and adopted it as their own? I was watching a Chris Rock stand up routine on sky the other day. The use of the word nigger was amazing, I lost count. What I found the most interesting was how many times he used words like cracker etc to describe white people. All I could think was if a white guy was on stage doing the same routine he wouldn't have been allowed on tv, probably would have been arrested on grounds of racism.
