Daggers Posted 27 September 2006 Posted 27 September 2006 Right, I was sure that music files kept disappearing from my external HD...and I've just gone to play Pressure Drop by Toots & the Maytals...and it had gone! Someone, anyone tell me how to stop this incredibly annoying leakage of music. It's happening all the time Please

hairy Posted 27 September 2006 Posted 27 September 2006 There was a virus spreading on P2P networks last month that hid your files. Cant remember its name but if you go to a P2P forum I am sure there will be details there. Are you one of those suckers who use Limewire? If so its probably well worth looking into.

Bugger me sideways, you weren't wrong you know... I never normally run a full disk scan because I assume that the live virus check, the firewall and the weekly sweep with Ad-aware would take care of it all, lazy me I suppose. So, I ran a thorough scan and there was a virus in one of the music files. Well done my hirsute friend. Thanks. Do you not use any P2P then, I don't see how emule would be any safer than Limewire. I love Limewire.

Daggers Posted 27 September 2006 Author Posted 27 September 2006 thief! Agreed ...but in my defense I do buy CD's of bands I rate that I've downloaded. For example: I bought all of Elbow's output, the last by Bloc Party, Wedding Present and Chumbawamba ~ and I'm going to buy Costello Songs even though I've already downloaded the lot. Most of the rest is just stuff I already have on vinyl and can't be bothered to transfer over to the laptop.

cisono Posted 27 September 2006 Posted 27 September 2006 Bugger me sideways... Not sure how that would work Do you not use any P2P then, I don't see how emule would be any safer than Limewire. I love Limewire. Then learn to love its viruses too!
Daggers Posted 27 September 2006 Author Posted 27 September 2006 Not sure how that would work Then learn to love its viruses too! I believe there are some educational websites on the internet where all will be graphically revealed How can torrents be any safer than Limewire downloads?
hairy Posted 28 September 2006 Posted 28 September 2006 I believe there are some educational websites on the internet where all will be graphically revealed How can torrents be any safer than Limewire downloads? Been using P2P for many years. First off on a dial up using Napster when it was free. Over the years I have tried them all and found torrents the best by far. Torrents are much safer. Firstly its harder for 'them' to track you. Secondly if you use private tracker sites then others will post comments on the quality of the files or if they have discovered anything suspicious such as a virus. Been using them for years and never had a problem. Used WinMX and Kazaa before and lost everything due to viruses a couple of times. The only issue with torrents on private sites is that you have to give back what you have taken i.e. if you have downloaded 1gig of music off oink you have to give back 1gig (acctually I think the ratio is 1:0.5).

cisono Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Torrents rule, ok? Surely torrents *flow* (when they are not dry)?
