Sosban's Yearly Egg Chasing Thread.

6Ns time again and Finnegan's favourite time of the sporting year! Even more excitement as this year looks like the most open in decades. Even you boys could knick the championship if you get REALLY lucky (IE, the French,Irish, Scots and Welsh all die in train wrecks! lol )

It's a cliché they reel out every year, but in this case it really is fairly true. Scotland will be the Wales '05 of this year, the dark horse everyone quietly fancies and with Ireland, Italy and Wales all at home there's massive potential for upset; Ireland are everyone's favourites but it's largely based on last year's domestic form, in particular that of Munster who now lie pitifully 9th (out of 11) in the Magners League. Every rugby rent-a-fan in the country will be spewing out the usual clichés up about France too, and which French side "will turn up", but unfortunately for the other five teams - French professionalism is ever improving under Laporte and they'll see this as a major step towards the World Cup, most likely the bookies' number 2 and worthy. Wales see a repeat of the '05 situation with a huge and decisive first game in Cardiff holding the potential to change the whole tournament, not just for ourselves but for Ireland, too. Injuries look likely to frustrate, again but a win against the paddies at home will destroy their Grand Slam hopes from the off set and give us the necessary confidence to return to our creative best. But don't get downhearted, even I'm not stupid enough to write off England. A genuine mystery, a changed squad, a new coach and an always determined attitude will make England the most intriguing side in the tournament, not to be written off considering the staggering strength in the depth the nation has. Oh, and Italy are playing too.

So! Any takers? Anyone care this year? Anyone else but me actually looking forward to the TV being dominated by rugby for a month? :dunno::D:D

Honestly?

I fancy France.

I know, I know - wash my mouth out.

Sorry guys - I've said it now though.

Strongly fancy France. Think Scotland will do well if they start okay. Don't fancy the Irish/Welsh to have enough to sustain form throughout to win it - but on their day they can beat anyone. England are a genuine mystery at the moment... hard to predict a victory outright, but we'll see, fingers crossed.

Oh and as you say - Italy. Nope. :P

:o You dirty fecker!

Hang your head in shame.

;)

Breaking news that Jonny Wilkinson will start!

he's only played for 45 minutes in donkeys years.

Blimey.

I don't follow Rugby a whole deal (though I did watch the later stages of the '03 World Cup, and used to watch the occasional Super 12 game) but even I'm aware of Wilko's injury problems.

Lee Morris of Rugby, I'd say.

-----------------------

As I said before, I have a passing interest in Rugby. I will probably watch the WC this year if it's televised (should be, Rugby is almost popular here) lol. I used to watch some Super 12 as well, though they seemed to stop broadcasting it for a while. :dunno:

I don't know enough to say who'll win it... but that doesn't normally stop me.

Ireland.

ireland may struggle with the switch to croke park but look to have the best back line along with the welsh . i think france will be focusing too heavilly on the world cup , scotland have come on leaps and bounds but i still think only italy will be below them, england will be interesting and i expect us to do well at twickers , the trip to cardiff will be a close call. most open 6 nations for years and cannot see a grand slam anywhere

my final table

1. wales

2. ireland

3. england

4. france

5. scotland

6. italy

I like you, stick around. ;)

We've certainly got one of the best, if not the best, back lines in the Northern Hemisphere. Unfortunately that relies on them all being fit and able as our strength in depth isn't great in any sport. Injuries to Williams, Mark Jones, Tom Shanklin and Gareth Thomas' likely suspension are causing serious, serious concerns.

Questions also remain over the form of our pack. Time will tell, I've booked Sunday off work. Can't wait.

Parker's over-rated and I'm not the world's biggest Hook fan. He's promising, don't get me wrong, but he's developing - he's not going to be a match winner so early in his six nation's career, I don't think. But aye, the 9/10 battle will be thrilling - but Ireland will be looking for their centers to out-do ours. Peel and Jones are the best 9/10 pairing in the Magners' and there's nothing in the English premiership to match them, either - that domestic bond is a great asset. But Ireland's centers and the strength of their pack will be a huge test for us.

My missus hasnt shut up about this all week long, as an Irish fan shes confident, I personally couldn't care less but will cheer if we beat them and be sure to rub it in.

I honestly can't see that making a difference mate.

As has been said elsewhere though - I can't see anyone running away with this and doing the Grandslam. Most games, I reckon, will be competitive as even Italy aren't *that* bad. I just think the French have got a LOT of quality in their squad and are a good unit.

The Welsh have arguably the strongest 1st XV... but then again, will they all be there and available? There are also just a couple of weak spots which might... or might not be exploited.

It's be the best 6N for a while though

Couple of interesting predictions from the pundits, here. Like I said, England a lot more fancied than you'd think. I think you're dreaming if you fancy second, mind. Interesting to see Davies come up with a fairly patriotic prediction, for once, he's usually a bit of a pessimist.

More squad news is that Balshaw joins an oddly extensive 6N injury list and Gavin Henson is entirely axed from the Welsh 22 because, allegedly "he isn't good enough" to get past Robinson and Hook.

We're also gathering other 6N threads on FT. Could we possibly get them all merged together and stickied as one 6N thread, by a mod please? :)

Is that a hint Finnegan...if so yes you can be my assistant or coach!!!

I'm honoured, mate. But only if I get a pretty stylish turban with the team logo on it.

wilkinson will get a big hit early on, guaranteed. very big gamble, which i dont think will pay off.

How's it feel to be totally and utterly wrong? :D:thumbup:

He was excellent today, although he was miles in touch for the try, how the video ref didn't see it is anyone's guess. Harry Ellis was excellent aswell, under Robinson he never seemed to re-create his Tigers form for England but now Ashton's in it's looking like he'll be allowed to fulfill his potential.

I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert on rugby, but after that performance I don't think we've quite got enough to win it. Have to say I expected better from Scotland aswell.
