Don't tell Thracian

That there quote basically sums it up. Yes, me and only me. I'm the only person that remembers the constant ravings about the club's best finisher.

At least I admit (and am happy to parody) my obvious biases, the blinkered Tony Land you sometimes live in is genuinely alarming.

It was actually manager Rob Kelly who described Dodds as the club's "most natural finisher" at the time.

and no reason we shouldn't trust him.

Dodds was crap, is crap and will always be crap.

Irrespective of Thracian's views on anything from young players to politics and policing, there's no denying that the guy knows football and has a great knowledge of the game in general. I'd say I'm probably biased but his philosophy is so similar to mine in footballing terms that I thoroughly enjoy reading his, albeit long, summations of games and his identification of weak areas / suggestions of how to put them right. It's become easier in a sense that we're now trying to pass teams to death and carve out openings playing good football and counter-attacking at pace.

Yes there are things he says which people disagree with - myself included - and yes there are things he says which at times appear ludicrous, but his opinions are so much more interesting and entertaining to read than most of the knee-jerk reactionary drivel many post on here.

He comes across as being the kind of manager a footballer would love to play for based on his interpretation of the game. Y'know, provided you were the right age and all. :P

But anyway, as an aside, apes are magnificent creatures.

I don't think that was the issue at all - the issue was the others who were getting picked, like DeVries, Cadamarteri and Horsfield, were much worse yet we persevered with them.

Thanks - I had to laugh! :D

Nonsense. Despite his protestations, all too many posters on Foxes Talk are well aware he's given his backing to far more flops than successes. Getting one right every now and then when you sing the praises of the majority of the academy isn't great vision, it's probability.

There's a reason it's Fez writing regularly for the Mockery. Love to read his views on our youth products, endlessly more grounded, down to Earth and rational.

It always seems to me that when I see your name on a post it always seems to be followed by some form of angry remark. I'd rather hear/read the opinions of someone like Thracian who tends to try and see the positives in younger players and seems to have a pretty good track record.

Of course not all youth players fulfil their potential - I played to a decent level as a child and saw some fantastic players that couldn't break through into pro-football for a variety of reasons such as attitude, injury, and bad luck (I hasten to add that I was no way near making it due to plain simple lack of talent). Therefore, it seems blantantly obvious that somone who is a keen advocate of younger players will get some wrong - what strikes me is that Thracian tries to present the positives whilst giving a fairly balanced view on the player. Nothing wrong with that.

lol

Sorry NLF but it says you joined in 25-August 2010. The Thracian who posts on here now is nothing like the Thracian of 3/4 years ago. His postings were nothing like balanced when it came to young players or managers for that matter.

I like the new thrac, he doesn't post as much so he tends to make his point and move on. The old Thrac would turn every single thread into a lecture on the merits of Alan Sheehan and friends.

Sosban Fach is right on this occasion.

It's just sexual frustration.

You can never find a good sheep in Leicester.

Not when it comes to King. The way Thracian describes him from his academy days was pretty much what we see today. Most of the people on here were dismissing his calls for King's inclusion at the time saying that the management knows best. A lot weren't exactly complimentary either once he started getting his chance under Pearson in League One, that was until he started showing the qualities we now know he has.

Yes, Thracian was too much at times and he can be accused of having blinkered views on the academy players, but he does possess a fine ability to spot the strengths and weaknesses of players and insight into how they can impact at first team level.

I wouldn't know about his sexual frustrations though

The whole point of what people are saying is that he has championed many players, back all the horses in a race and you'll win.

Yeah he may have been calling for Kings inclusion in our relegation season (along with half a dozen others), doesn't mean he would have been the King we know though. The King we have now isn't the same player he was three years ago and neither is Gradel. They have both progressed, Gradel wasn't even first choice for Leeds last year after leaving us. (According to Thracian that was a ploy to keep his price down, although he still wasn't first choice when he moved there on a permanent).

It might not of hurt having King in the team, but the way he talked at the time was that with him in the team things would be different end of story, no ifs, no buts. Which is nonsense.

Exactly. Another fair analogy is to, as I've done before, compare him to Nostradamus. There are those that think Nostradamus is incredible, but most are aware the man made literally uncountable predictions - some were bound to be correct.

If you just take his words with a grain of salt and filter out the so-called 'championing' he does make some worthwile observations. The few times I've seen King, he's shown the qualities quite accurately described by Thracian years back now. He has developed, no doubt, but his main competences are the same now as they were then. It only took half a year from the time Thracian called for his inclusion until he became a regular starter. And you can't say that he didn't have an immediate influence on our results! And to Thracian's defence he has also been very quick to dismiss a lot of academy players and players that have been brought in, that effectively didn't make it here. Off the top of the head I only remember him being very late in acknowledging Abe's ability and importance for the team.

So the point I'm making is that you and Finners are exaggerating presumably on the basis that Thracian repeated himself numerous times when it came to players he backed and had less than popular opinions on societal issues. He didn't back each and every young player, and he did give good ideas to alternatives when some of our first team players were seriously underperforming. Give credit when it's due I say

No, I'm not.

I do. Congrats on spotting King and not so congrats on the other 20 who slipped into obscurity.

You could argue that the level of a top League One side is about the equivalent of a bottom Championship side. Leeds, Norwich and Millwall are so far lending their weight to that argument. King cut it straight away for the best team in League One. It's not unthinkable he could've had enough of an impact to ensure survival 6 months earlier.

But fair enough if you think Thracian makes no worthwile observations on youth players (with the exception of King). I just happen to disagree.
