dynamite foxes Posted 1 February 2005 Posted 1 February 2005 I think Levein will sign a few players between 18-21 to be back up and challenge for the first team. 18-21- Wright, Stearman, Dawson, Sheenan, + 3 or 4 others 22-25- Gudjonsson, Stewart, Heath, Williams, Kisnorbo, Wilkie?, Kirk?, Hughes, + 2or 3 others 26-30- MDV, Maybury, Connolly, +1 or 2 others 30-35 Tiatto like the fact that we will have more 18-21 and 22-25 players than older. Any ideas about players coming in Mad Biker for next season?

I think CL might well go scouting in Holland this summer, seeing as he found De Vries there.

He makes even Damien Duff and Arjen Robben look like a pair of donkeys. No kidding. Also Ajax have a young Heskey look alike and play alike (though he seems to be able to stay on his feet a bit more) who is not a first team regular. Not sure of his name but he scored recently in a friendly tournament for Ajax and I am sure he will be on a few coach's radars. Plenty of good players in the Dutch leagues and I am surprised they are not raided more frequently.

Rumour has it that Ajax might be willing to release him, but I imagine there would be the usual suspects out there to snap him up.

The majority of players in the age bracket of 18-25 has been a dream of mine for a long time and now it looks like to be coming true
Durnerz Posted 1 February 2005 Posted 1 February 2005 With the money we have spent already I wouldnt expect anyone else under 23 to come in because of the compensation payments along with the fee, to be honest It's not the age that counts, its the quality, no player will be here for life.

That's also why I think Spurs will come good with Jol and Arnesen...these two know how to get quality at knockdown prices. Obviously CL can't have the same knowledge about Dutch football, but if he can get a decently skilled player in for little money I'd be very happy. Durnerz might be right though. CL has already had a sizeable part of next years budget advanced, so it's not certain that we'll get that many players in this summer.

We have a lot of players out of contract in the summer and another parachute payment. Adams signed alot of old boys on quite alot of money, which meant he couldn't pay transfer fee's for many players. Although I might add, he did spend a £1 million on Williams and Connolly. Levein has signed MDV, Maybury and Kisnorbo on no more than £4000 a week I guarantee. Hughes won't be paid much more. Levein wants young hungry players with a point to prove, you can pick these players up for a small transfer fee from bigger teams where they can't get a look in and their wages aren't as high as you think. Alot lower than the likes of Keown, Dublin and Dabizas who are on atleast £10,000 a week each! Sunderland signed sensibly last summer, they didn't go for quantity. They signed 5 or 6 young talented players for alot less money than we splashed out overall in the summer.

We might have to cut further down for next season, although having said that, of course the wage budget will leaving some breathing space for CL...I'm not well-informed on the parachute payments but I'm sure you could enlighten me on that

I am not sure what pre-selection means in this context. In some kind of squad possibly. I would say that if we get a lot of cash soon they we should do ourselves a favour and get these two in.

And I suspect it means a preliminary squad... like selecting 30 players before cutting down to the final squad 21-22... so I guess it means getting selected for the squad... our national manager does it often too, selecting a few youngsters form the U-21 team to train with the senior team...
Steven Posted 8 March 2005 Posted 8 March 2005 You speak Dutch then? 76435 More than enough to get by.
TrickyTrev Posted 8 March 2005 Posted 8 March 2005 If somebody is on the fringes of the dutch national side and is at Ajak why the hell would they come to us? We need more realistic targets. <_<

We need more realistic targets. <_< 76444 Have to agree. These sound like the sort of players Arsene Wenger goes for. I don't think they'd be tempted by the thought of turning out for City on a wet Tuesday evening at Crewe, somehow.
Jonbluefox9 Posted 8 March 2005 Posted 8 March 2005 I was looking through the pictures from tonights game on the OS and I could see the makings of a fresh young side. That may seem pretty obvious due to the fact that all of Levein's signings have been younger but it just confirmed to me how terribly stupid these people that are already calling for Levein are. I and I think the majority of us can see what Craig's building and the fact that he's started rebuilding before the end of the season will mean by the start of pre-season training he will probably have his complete squad together or very nearly have his full squad. This will give them time to get to know each other and will prevent this Micky Adams excuse of 'needing time to gel'. This season we had about three players join us during the Pepsi Max Challenge and that was our last warm up tournament before the season began. That can't have helped us but next season, which I'm confident will begin with us still in the Championship, we'll have a young and hungry squad that Levein can be judged upon.
