Cat Burger Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 And what a song that is !! I love the Dropkicks, and I really want to see them live but I missed them last time around Green fields of France from the Warriors Code album for any retards out there EHEHEHE Very apt as it was the anniversary of the Somme yesterday. Oh how do you do, young Willie McBride? Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside, And rest for a while in the warm summer sun? I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done. And I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen When you joined the great fall-in in Nineteen-Sixteen. Well I hoped you died quick, and I hoped you died clean, Or Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene? Did they beat the drums slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? And Did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind? In some loyal heart, is your memory enshrined? And though you died back in Nineteen-Sixteen, To that loyal heart you're forever nineteen, Or are you a stranger without even a name, Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane, In an old photograph torn, tattered and stained, And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame Did they beat the drums slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? The sun's shining down on these green fields of France, The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance. The trenches have vanished long under the plow, No gas, no barbed wire; no guns firing now! But here in this graveyard, that's still no mans land, The countless white crosses in mute witness stand, To man's blind indifference to his fellow man, And a whole generation where butchered and damned Did they beat the drums slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? And I can't help but wonder oh Willie McBride, Do all those that lie here know why they died, Did you really believe them when they told you the cause, Did you really believe that this war would end wars? Well the suffring', the sorrow, the glory, the shame, The killing and dying it was all done in vain. Oh Willie McBride, it all happened again, And again and again and again and again! Did they beat the drums slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? Beautiful song. Go see them live it was a laugh... Ken Casey is a nice man. However, it's physical... I'm quite a big lad and I still got well and truly moshed.
Cat Burger Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 P.S Those lyrics were pasted, I'm not a cretin like the person who copied them ROOFLEZ

Cat Burger Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Ahh as far as I'm aware it's a dropkick murphys song, but they do do a lot of covers i suppose Lovely regardless.
Finnegan Posted 3 July 2006 Posted 3 July 2006 Ahh as far as I'm aware it's a dropkick murphys song, but they do do a lot of covers i suppose Lovely regardless. They do a lot of covers, and Green Fields of France (as any fan of Irish / folk music should know) is one such. It's adopted as an Irish catholic / rebel song so of course it's of great appeal to the Murphs. Captain Kelly's Kitchen (actually called Courting In The Kitchen) is the other folk song of note on Warrior's Code, though Auld Triangle isn't actually theirs either. The best traditional arrangement they've done is the Fields of Athenry, IMO - though their Rocky Road's pretty fudging good. Currently listening to Half Man Half Biscuit - Vatican Broadside. :D Whooooooo the focking hell are Sliiiipknoooot?
