Thracian Posted 13 May 2007 Posted 13 May 2007 It was a couple of years ago I mentioned that Emile Heskey was a cracking defender who might well make a centre-back in time. Looking at his brief performance in central defence I'm even more convinced. Any chance of us getting him back?
lookwhaticando Posted 13 May 2007 Posted 13 May 2007 I vote James Beattie as his partner at centre-half.

My dad and I have a little running joke regarding Beattie at Everton this season. He only seems to come on when Everton have a comfortable margin - two goals or so. "Looks like Everton are bringing on an extra defender"

sdb Posted 13 May 2007 Posted 13 May 2007 emile was my 1st love ( ) and immense at centre back today but they were all balls in the air he dealt with. he's a clumbsy tackler and would be found out against better opposition and in more open games. that said, you can't shy away when playing in defence (like he can do up top) and when he's on it he's bloody good. probably better than most of wigans defenders too (and keepers!). what the hell happened to beattie, he was quality at southampton?!

sdb Posted 13 May 2007 Posted 13 May 2007 What a coup if MM could somehow get Heskey back. that would be my dream come true! shame wigan stayed up in that respect but i'm glad they did. seeing em as captain too is great, good shout i reckon given his work ethic. plus he cant really hide then (so to speak!) like he does in games every so often
Koke Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 He was immense at defence today. But thats also due to the fact that Sheffield Utd kept playing the long balls in the end. They were getting really desperate. He's a wee bit clumsy on the floor and would get found out just like that by oppositions. I was proud of him today.
lookwhaticando Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 Heskey relegated Birmingham... he nearly relegated Wigan too. Wigan might be willing to accept a fire-sale price on him, just to avoid the same fate as Birmingham last season. Could he be the man to organize our defence?
Ric Flair Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 Heskey used to play at centre half for the Boys Brigade before he joined Leicester's youth team. This is true by the way
Geo V Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 Heskey would make a great center-half as he is quality in the air, brave, strong and has pace. He has a defenders pass and shot as well . I doubt we`ll be able to bring him back for at least 2 more years. He is way too valuable and would probably command a £4m transfer fee even now. I used to wish that Stevie Walsh stayed up front because anytime he played theer he scored goals. I dont know why a player should just play in one position because thats where they have played most of there career. If you stumble across the fact that a player can excel in another position, why not keep him there??!

He was always valuable defensively under MON. But while he isn't quite my idea of an instinctive centre-forward, having him at the back but able to come forward for set plays or in emergency if we need a goal or two quickly would have similar benefits to Walsh. Ah well, no harm in wishing.
Geo V Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 Ive seen so many players on TV or on the pitch live who I have thought are playing out os position or at least are not playing to theer potential at the position they regularly play in. Its teh same at the moment with Gareth Bale at Southampton. I cant believe that this kid is a left-back because whenever I have seen him play he cant defend. He to me possesses all the skills to be a really good left-winger who can help out a left-back as aposed to occupying the full-back position.

Geo V Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 See Paul Warhurst, Chris Sutton, Henrik Pederson, Robbie Savage...................... Yeah I remember when Warhurst scored loads of goals for Sheff Weds then he went off the boil. Not that many players are tried out of position though. I know that Moaninho has been moaning about losing Essien from central midfield and he was making mistakes when he first played at centre-back but in the last few games Ive seen he seems to be there best player from centre-half??! Maybe he has learned the positional aspects of the role because he seems a quality CB now as well.

Any chance of us getting him back? Heskey was awesome for Wigan yesterday and I agree that he would make a good centre back. He has the strength and workrate to play there, he never shys out of a challenge and wins balls in the air. To be fair to him he has been good all season for Wigan and I personally think he is one of the most under-rated players in that league.
Joe. Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 I've never thought Hesley to be a bad player even when everyone else has thought him to be. Yesterday's performance from him kept Wigan in the Premiership
Bryn Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 I think his tackling would see him caught out, I think he'd be very clumsy in the box which would make him something of a liability. He was awesome against the Blades though.

I think similar of Mattock to be honest, though he would seem to be equally good in both positions.
