Anyone ever been?

I know Thracian's views on it, what with it's relative proximity to Kent, so would appreciate it if he kept his cynical, critical and unhelpful 'advice' out of this thread.

I know it's the 'gay' capital of the south.. but have been recommended it as a great place to go. I've never been and was considering going this weekend coming for a couple of days. I'm then up to Santa Pod drag strip (dragracing, not the kind of drag strip you'd find Thracian/Ultra and Matt at as paying customers and performer respectively) on the Monday.

So... anyone been? Thoughts?

There's a Travelodge on the way in on the A23.

Seemed like a nice place to me. Shame about the pebbled beachage.

Brighton is quality. You should definitely go.

It's not far out of London and I have a mate there so go quite regularly.

There's a great area called The Lanes - quite large with loads of cool little shops and bars, perfect for a sunny afternoon drinking and wandering around.

There's a buzz to the place and plenty of clubs - depends what you're thing is but the clubbing scene (not just gay at all) is excellent. Loads of nights on at the weekend and they attract quite high profile names.

It has a kind of abroad/Med feel to it with all the whitewashed houses and the sea. Also there's good places to eat and of course the Pier. You kind of have to go to it. Classic British seaside stuff.

As you've probably guessed I love the place, have had a lot of fun down there.

One note of caution - we ventured into a couple of gay bars as they were the only places open (honest) and I was getting quite overtly perved on  - quite a "unique" experience, made me feel like what women probably feel every time they go out! The good looking ones that is.

Thanks for the tips mate!

I'm not really in to clubbing to be honest with you... but we'll see where things lead I suppose.

My sister goes quite regular, and is pretty mad on the clubbing scene...but im pretty much like you in the sence that im not really a club goer (prefer to potter around the decent bars), and she tells me its a really cool place to go pretty chilled out, so im sure you will have a good time!

My ex is from Brighton so I spent quite a lot of the last two Summers and other uni hols down there - as mentioned it is a nice place but an expensive one.

I can't really help with accommodation as we always stayed in her flat but food wise the sushi place Moshi Moshi (by the Town Hall) is nice if you like sushi. If you go on a Sunday its a lot cheaper, though if you want to be real sneaky (though perhaps its too late now) sign up on their website and say your birthday is during your stay and one person gets to eat free when 2+ go. If you like Thai there is a place in the centre called riki tiks (or something similar) that do really nice Thai for less than a fiver, but they alternate the menu every so often so might be doing Cantonese or something instead. There is a pub called the Hop Poles that does really nice food as well - its sort of near the beach. Also if you really are fussed about sandy beaches there are some just outside the city - let me know and I can ask the ex.

Nightlife wise there are loads of clubs but also a lot of pubs have live acts in the evening. If you like jazz there is a pub that often has good acts thats right opposite the train station. It's next door/couple of doors along to a cafe that does really good fry ups as well. If you like junk go to the sunday market in the train station car park - beware some weeks its great but others its shite and you have to get there early

Could end up being an expensive weekend I reckon as I'm betting accomodation isn't all that cheap either.

Cheers Leicfox!

Most guest houses operate a 2 night minimum stay and they are bloody expensive!

It's a cracking place though but I prefer Bournemouth.

I spent £400 in 2 nights down there and that wasn't including accomadation. Quality weekend though, but beer is about £4 a pint and I spent £80 in the Chinese pissed up. So that probably explains the needless £400 spending.

It looks like costing me a fortune for accommodation. If I can even get in anywhere.

Why didn't I plan this a few weeks ago?

:P

You could always sleep on the beach.

Or convince a local to let you stay.

I have been twice actually a few times (when working in nearby Lewis).

It was rather gay. Plenty of stuff to do and places to go/eat.

Thanks Cis.

Reckon I'll eat in Brighton.

Staying in Worthing. Could be expensive cab in and out? Ah well.

Check out train and other connections as well. You never know...

Brighton is a cool place to be whether for clubbing or just some drinks with friends. I'm not a clubber and have had many a good night down there. It is no more expensive than anywhere in London that I have noticed. If you are th kind of person who wanders around thinking "that bloke looks GAY!" then don't bother, but I don't get that impression. Enjoy!

apperently gay clubs are the best clubs, as in fun wise.
