Imprisoned Hughes set for Oldham

Oldham are close to agreeing a deal to sign striker Lee Hughes when he is released from prison.

Former West Brom and Coventry player Hughes, 31, is set to be released from prison this summer.

He was sentenced to six years in jail in 2004 after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

"Lee deserves a second chance and we consider this a top-class signing," Oldham director Barry Owen told the club website.

"Oldham Athletic does not condone what happened and we are very sympathetic towards the family of the victim.

"However, Lee Hughes is now nearing the end of his sentence and he has paid the price for what occurred.

"We would ask supporters and the general public not to pass moral judgement.

"We hope that if his hearing is successful Lee will be available to play for Oldham near to the start of the season.

"The player is training very hard and is exceptionally fit. Bearing in mind his past footballing achievements, I hope this will turn out to be one of our best signings for many years." Hughes began his career with Kidderminster before earning a move to the Baggies in 1997 for £350,000. He signed for Coventry for £5m in 2001 but moved back to West Brom a year later for a fee of £2.5m.

2004 + 6 = 2010?

How nice for the Victim's friends and family to watch him get paid huge wages and live the high life again (i know its only oldham but football is football) after a LONG LONG LONG 2 years

heh, yes its not how, but why!

The jails are getting full.

So some prisoners are being released before their sentences finish. Hughes is obviously one of them.

Football's his trade, so that's why he's seeking a return to the game.

But I don't think justice has really been done.

3 Years, he's not out until August I don't think.

Hardly anyone serves a full sentance these days most people get the oppurtunity of parole.

Touting a player still under sentance is extremeley low and disrespectful to the victims family by making it public. I'm sure he'll get his fair share of stick both on and off the pitch if he returns. Personally, if I was playing against this kind of criminal I would want to put my foot in. Someone better get him to very good shinpads

Why anyone would want to support that arsehole is beyond me.

As the late great Mike Dickin used to say "justice and the law have absolutely nothing to do with each other"

Like it or not he's been a good boy inside and had his sentenced halved. He needs to earn a living when he's released so why not on the football pitch.

Yes more than likely, he'll get a bad reaction. But I imagine it won't last that long. The event wasn't high profile enough, nor did it affect enough people personally, for it to linger.

I wonder which League One fans will come up with the best chants about him!!
