Ric Flair Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Does anyone know if we still have an agreement with that Irish team to have their best players? I remember Taylor and Alan Hill set it up and we got Damien Delaney and some other chap. It doesn't seem like we venture very far in signing up academy players anymore. We have one oversea's star now that Petrescu and Ahmed Deen have gone. I think our academy needs sorting out, Ipswich and Sunderland are forever signing quality youngsters for their academy and they have a brilliant track record of producing special players for their first team. Ipswich have recently got Dean McDonald from Arsenal who's meant to be class and John Paul Kelly from Liverpool. Why don't we get anyone?
Scarby Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Cork City - no that ended i believe when we went into Admin as we couldnt afford it!!! We have that Indian club now who are doing quite well, there is a link to it on the OS
Mark Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 I think that was cancelled a few years ago, shortly after Peter Taylor left. The academy promised so much last year, it was improving and improving, now the majority of them players have progressed into the reserve team, the academy teams are not having much success anymore. Alan Hill should never have been sacked. Why we kept Bassett instead of Hill i'll never know. Hill was the future, he knew what talents were out there and he is such a high profile academy manager he could snap them up over top Europeans teams - Petrescu & Wesolowski especially.

I think The Foxes Trust should raise concerns about our academy and they should ask the board to explain what is happening with it. They keep us in the dark about it and Levein has gone on record saying he's not overly impressed with it. We were doing well last season, but we needed to sustain our success over a number of years like many clubs do and not necessarily bigger clubs than us. It annoys me to think how many young talented players we might have if Hill was still here. Taylor might have been the ultimate twat here, but he knew a good man in Hill.

chambo_9 Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 No I dont want them to start buying players cus then i'll get knocked back a few pegs
Teeno Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Hill was Class. The academy is shite. We only get about 3 decent players every decade now

Fox in a Box Posted 11 February 2005 Posted 11 February 2005 Alan Hill should never have been sacked When City went into admin, he was a makeweight on the salary side. He has proven pedigree and I was at the meeting where the foxestrust was set-up. If one man warranted his job it was him. He was at forest (ok sorry there) but he found players like ried, dawson, prutton to name a few. Now I'm not saying all of his choices make the grade but he had some excellent contacts. So where is he now?

shen Posted 11 February 2005 Posted 11 February 2005 Found this, searching for Alan Hill on google.. : City's Assistant Manager had a short playing career, starting as a goalkeeper at Barnsley and moving to Tommy Docherty's Rotherham before joining Nottingham Forest in 1969. In the 1970-71 season he broke his arm in four places and that ended his playing days. He then became the Youth Team Coach at Forest and during his 25-year spell with the club, also served as Youth Development Officer, Chief Scout, Assistant Manager and General Manager before resigning to follow Frank Clark to Maine Road. "My brief is to come in and look at the whole situation and also to try to bring in new players for certain positions. Our success at Forest was based on being a family club and we really need to create that sort of atmosphere at City," said Hill shortly after his appointment.

shen Posted 14 February 2005 Posted 14 February 2005 Harps' Healy hoping to sign McGavigan 14/02/2005 - 18:20:26 Finn Harps manager Felix Healy is hoping to sign Republic of Ireland Under 19 midfielder Ryan McGavigan from Leicester City before the March 4 deadline. Donegal native McGavigan is to be released by the English side at the end of the season and Healy is hoping a return home will appeal to him, especially with the promise of Premier Division football next season. Healy sees McGavigan as the ideal replacement for the departed Tom Mohan who has joined Longford Town. *** So another one of our academy lads who will disappear into oblivion...Although it sounds crazy that he will play PREMIER DIVISION football, albeit in Ireland
shen Posted 14 February 2005 Posted 14 February 2005 He's awful. 66733 I'll take your word for that
Chandler Posted 15 February 2005 Posted 15 February 2005 I wouldn't get too hung up on academies boys. What have Forest and Pipswich done in recent years with their academy grads? Sold 'em. They're just feeder clubs. We had 6 seasons in the Prem, 2 League Cups and Europe with only one grad ever present (Bruno). Forest were brimming with talent two season ago and couldn't win away and couldn't get promotion. We beat 'em to autoprom with a team of jouneymen hoofers. What was the difference? A charismatic manager chums!!!

TrickyTrev Posted 15 February 2005 Posted 15 February 2005 A squad full of experienced Premiership players, Chandler. Not to mention GOOD premiership players like Muzzy Izzet, Paul Dickov, Ian Walker and, though ageing, Elliott and Taggart.

Jenas- 5 million Dawson/ Reid- 8 Million Prutton- 2 million You think they are struggling now, but where would they have been without that £15 million and without those players ervice for the last few years.? <_< Ipswich have much the same story, they ahcieved one of their most sucessful seasosn ever with their younsters in the squad but when they were relegated they were in extreme financial difficulty. The sale of younsters such as Bramble and Ambrose allowed them to keep afloat and challenge for promotion. They bnow even have new players on the production linein Darren Bent and Dean Bowditch who are key in their promotion sucess. If we could get a few youngsters coming through then our finaces would be a little more secure and maybe we wouldn't have to keep changing our squad every 12 months.
Guest Posted 15 February 2005 Posted 15 February 2005 A charismatic manager chums!!! 66777 The last one of those we had was Martin O'Neill.

Looks like they are helping Ipswich get promotion to the Premiership to me, as well as make them a lot of money in the past through selling the likes of Dyer and Ambrose. We ain't going to make any money out of Gemmill, Dublin, Makin, shit like that, despite how excited you must get going to watch them, or do you actually go anymore, i wouldn't put it past you to go and watch Coventry now
