Flynny Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6241596.stm A bit unexpected, that. To be honest they were probably better to leave it and let Richard Ashcroft carry on with his (shit) solo career.

Most of his songs are pretty decent, except Break The Night With Colour which is in fact one of the best songs ever written. In fact, you've just inspired me to put it on now.
Flynny Posted 26 June 2007 Author Posted 26 June 2007 Come on, he ain't that bad. Most of his songs are pretty decent, except Break The Night With Colour which is in fact one of the best songs ever written. In fact, you've just inspired me to put it on now. Everything he's done since is passable. Good on the radio, maybe. But compared to what he did with the Verve it's terrible. He's got the Keane problem - (though admittedly nowhere near as bad) - where half his lyrics are just vague cliches. The music's nowhere near as good either. Hopefully the reformation of the band sorts that latter problem out. Hopefully.
The People's Hero Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 I'm partial to a bit of The Verve (in relatively small doses).
Cheese Me Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 Cannot wait. I saw them at Brixton just before they split and they were awesome. One of my favourite bands in the late nineties. Will definitely be going to see them

Nationwider Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 I feel like marching down the pavement outside my house and pushing random strangers out of the way - just to celebrate this news. They were ok. I liked "Sonnet" and "Bitter Sweet Symphony". Sonnet had strange lyrics - something like, "If you like my sonnet, look under the bonnet, if you really wan'it, yeah yeah" - odd. RA's solo career hasd received short shrift in these parts, though.

The People's Hero Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 I f**king hate Richard Ashcroft. You'll find some rare disagreement in these parts mate! Nothing special, but some good songs. Bearable? Certainly. Enjoyable? At times. The Verve? Yes please - I approve.
Rocket-Ron Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 Didn't Richard Ashcroft slag of some of his former band members for trying to keep the verve going? Seems ok for him to try when his solo carrier doesn't take of as expected.
Leonisco Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 They were ok. I liked "Sonnet" and "Bitter Sweet Symphony". Brilliant tunes. Also, Lucky Man and Drugs Don't Work were excellent. In fact, pretty much everything off Urban Hymns, now that was a good album.
The People's Hero Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 Brilliant tunes. Also, Lucky Man and Drugs Don't Work were excellent. In fact, pretty much everything off Urban Hymns, now that was a good album. Too right. Drugs Don't Work is a masterpiece in my opinion.
Leonisco Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 Too right.Drugs Don't Work is a masterpiece in my opinion. Just for you then... The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my love Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm comin' down And I hope you're thinking of me As you lay down on your side Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again But I know I'm on a losing streak 'Cause I passed down my old street And if you wanna show, then just let me know And I'll sing in your ear again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again 'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my love Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm comin' down Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again 'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead But if you wanna show, just let me know And I'll sing in your ear again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again I'm never going down, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down, I'm never going down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more Superb.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 The Drugs Don't Work (and Stand By Me by Oasis) came out as singles when I was about 13, the same week that my Grandma died. They were both everywhere on the radio and stuff, I couldn't listen to either song for years afterwards and have never been fully able to appreciate them. Richard Ashcroft just seems a bit MOR to me. Personal taste.

Always upsets me, that song.
city1993 Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 Wicked news, can't wait to hear theire new stuff. Get in there.
Cheese Me Posted 27 June 2007 Posted 27 June 2007 Brilliant tunes. Also, Lucky Man and Drugs Don't Work were excellent. In fact, pretty much everything off Urban Hymns, now that was a good album. Definitely. A Northern Soul is great too. History.... quality stuff!
mancunianfox Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 I actually thought Urban Hymns was pretty bland. Not as bland as Ashcroft on his own though. A Northern Soul and A Storm In Heaven were both awesome records and I am glad they have reformed with in their original lineup with Nick McCabe and without Simon Tong. One of the more promising reformations imo and especially good as I don't have to watch Richard Ashcroft embarassing himself anymore.
Stevosevic Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Good band, always liked them, Urban Hymns is a brilliant album IMO.
Stevosevic Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Favourite song from Urban Hymns? 'This time' is the best IMO.
Leonisco Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Favourite song from Urban Hymns? 'This time' is the best IMO. Sonnet.
