Following on from the componsentation gone crazy thread i decided to make a pc gone mad thread where we post as many stories as possible of pc gone mad and sum up how mad some people really are. @ kent fox and lisa please dont fill this thread up with law terms etc. We know your more intelectual than us in this field of subject but this isnt a debate just a thread stating the stupidity of these involved.

To get the ball rolling this article is about Hull council banning the word "lady". lol

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/c...ticle581622.ece

I wonder how the members of Hull city council plan to address their assembled guests next time they have a formal party. Last week the council’s corporate equalities unit (how’s that for an emetic name?) sent them an e-mail banning the use of, among others, the word “ladyâ€, which it said was offensive and needed to be replaced with “womanâ€. Which presumably nixes ever saying “ladies and gentlemenâ€. “Women and gentlemen†lacks charm, to put it mildly, although I suppose it is preferable to the absurd “women and menâ€.

Maybe Hull council does not have parties. Or maybe the fun-sounding corporate equalities unit does and is all perplexed when for some reason nobody ever turns up.

I wonder if any of its members has children. I used to know a few politically correct parents (since culled) who also banned “ladyâ€. Hearing a toddler or small child say “Look at that woman†is jarring, sounding discourteous and brusque. These were the same poor children who had to say “penis†and “vaginaâ€. They were about three and five years old at the time and — this is now quite common in homes as well as schools and nurseries — were not allowed to play “competitive†games in which there was a clear winner, such as football.

It is not just “lady†that is banned. Hull councillors are also strongly discouraged from saying “senior citizen†— I’m so behind with this guff that I thought this was the current PC term, but apparently not. It’s awfully hard to keep up.

Personally I favour “old peopleâ€. They’re people and they’re old and yet I have the feeling that we are not supposed to say “old people†any more. Goodness knows why.

We are certainly not supposed to say “old lady†which is now considered an insult to, well, old ladies. This is peculiar, because all the old ladies I know refer to themselves as “old ladies†and to old men as “old menâ€. The Hull councillors aren’t allowed to say “elderlyâ€, either. It’s like a mad joke, isn’t it, but a particularly poor one with no punchline.

Oh, and the poor (oops) old (double oops) councillors cannot say “disabledâ€, either, or “immigrantâ€. As the one-time immigrant parent of a possibly disabled child I find this laughable (are we still allowed to laugh or is it elitist and deeply wounding to people with no sense of humour?).

I really believe in political correctness: it is why we don’t say “spastic†or “poof†or “nigger†and why it is no longer considered acceptable to greet one’s female colleagues with a cheery slap on the backside. So it has its virtues. But examples such as the ones above make a farce of it and debase it as a result, ensuring that in the public mind political correctness remains the premise of what I like to call, correctly in my view, utter loonies.

Its all becoming a bit of a joke now. We cant say anything these days without some kind of which-hunt starting by some do gooder. Shows like Big Brother just highlight how OTT things get and that girl who said "My nigga" to that mutt Charley saw her words taken out of context and a political storm followed lol. Its not like she called her the full on N word is it?! However, if Chris Rock goes on stage and says the stuff in here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q8LxO4wnCQ...ted&search= , its OK, because he is black!

Ive mentioned it before but I`m a Greek Cypriot born in England who also classes himself as British who has a mixed raced son through a South American woman who is a bit black, Indian, Spanish and Guyanese in amongst her bloodline. I am living in Cosmopolitan London and my mates resemble a night at the UN as there are Asians, Italians, Greeks, Spanish, English, African origin and whatever in our circle of friends. The racism that comes out of each others mouths from some calling me illegal hairy donkey boners to us calling the Chinese mate a monkey or the black dudes apes could be deemed as vile unless you actually know how best of friends and harmless things are between us. Its a way that some interact to dispel the real racist issues that are out there with some folk. Im sure they`ll be some law passed soon of not being able to call a friend of 10 years something that may deemed negative even if no offense was taken.

My examples may be extreme but I'm sick of my son educating me in what they can and cant say in nursery rhymes and every day kids stories that we would say in innocence. The UK is going to OTT and its getting a silly place to live in these days.

Although I agree with alot of what you have said, there are certain terms I find vile such as "nigger", a term which is derigatory, and represents black suppression and slavery!!!!

I can't be arsed to real all that. Is it about a mental police officer or a malfuctioning computer?

A truly great thread, foxyarmy.

I actually take some umbrage with your quote though becasue it's presumptious. Just becasue I studied a bit of Law, does not make me more intellectual than others. There are people on here that know a lot more about a lot of things. You only have to read most of my other posts to realise that!

I am not a fan of PC because there are no real guidelines on where it starts or ends. So any idiot can come up with some poncy idea and claim it is PC.

Words such as those you used toward the end are still in use in the English language and to start projecting the thought that such words, and many others, are un-PC is almost like stating what a person can and cannot say in everyday chatting.

Banning the Robertson's Jam Golly was the last straw for me.

Apart from Chris Rock uses it in a very negative context to describe an element of the black community in America who have appropriated the word to describe themselves. During his sets its no different from how someone would use the currently acceptable term of chav to describe an undesirable and unwanted section of the white community. If a white person uses the term it does have a different meaning because of how it is linked so closely with opression and black slavery.

Baa, baa rainbow sheep

by CHRIS BROOKE, Daily Mail - More by this author » Last updated at 08:53am on 8th March 2006

Black, white, green or rainbow sheep?

It Has been a children's favourite for hundreds of years.

But 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' has again fallen victim to the drive for political correctness.

Has political correctness gone mad? Tell us in the reader comments below

Nursery school children are being taught to sing 'Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep' instead of the traditional rhyme.

Teachers at two centres were told to change the words to promote 'equal opportunities'.

It is not the first time the rhyme has been altered - previous substitutes for black include 'green' and 'happy' sheep.

Stuart Chamberlain, of the Oxford Sure Start Centre in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, said: "Basically we have taken the equal opportunities approach to everything we do.

"This is fairly standard across nurseries. We are following stringent equal opportunities rules. No-one should feel pointed out because of their race, gender or anything else."

Children at the Family Centre in nearby Abingdon are also taught the 'PC' version.

Mr Chamberlain said he could not explain why people singing or listening to the lyrics of the original version would be offended.

The origins of the famous rhyme have nothing to do with race.

Although the first publication of the nursery rhyme was in 1744, it probably dates back to the Middle Ages, possibly to the 13th Century, and relates to a tax imposed by the king on wool. One-third went to the local lord (the 'master'), one-third to the church (referred to as the 'dame') and about a third was for the farmer (the 'little boy who lives down the lane').

Yesterday the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Commission for Racial Equality refused to comment on the revised rhyme.

But the move has been condemned by campaigners as another crazy example of 'political correctness gone mad'. Nick Seaton of the Campaign for Real Education said: 'This is a traditional children's song and the reference to black sheep has nothing to do with black-skinned people.

"It's a new Stalinist approach to good manners and respect."

John Midgley, co-founder of the Campaign Against Political Correctness, said: "This is absolutely ridiculous. If they say it's for equal opportunities then it's counterproductive. It fails to understand the history of nursery rhymes which have enriched children's lives down the generations.

"It's a blatant example of political correctness and somebody ought to give the Sure Start Centre a good dose of common sense."

In 1999 Birmingham City Council said the rhyme should not be taught in school because it was racially negative and could cause offence. Last year a number of nursery schools in western Scotland began singing 'Baa Baa Happy Sheep'. And some children in London have also been taught 'Baa Baa Green Sheep'. At least one other traditional rhyme has also been targeted.

Three years ago Mothercare sold cassette tapes and CDs with a new version of Humpty Dumpty in which there was a happy ending.

In the PC version, Humpty Dumpty was able to 'count to ten and get up again'.

I remember being disgusted when I first read that. What a joke. I can't find a link to it but apparently someone tried to stop people calling blue and white tac by the respective colours, trying to get it changed to "generic tac".

I didn't write that statement, was from the article!!

That does take the pi*s

I don't know if anyones aware of the dutch christmas culture but they have these guys called "Black Peters" who travel with saint nicholas (basically guys who paint there face black). If Holland is anything like here they must have got a lot of stick for it but i cant seem to see anything on the net regarding this which means people have probably accepted it, as its a tradition which has been going on for hundreds of years...

Am I correct in thinking black board and white board are now also banned. The name now being "Writing Board". :dunno:

I can relate completly with what your saying. Im mixed race myself (half nigerian/half english) and the last workplace I worked in was very multicultral consisting of jamaican, asian, chinese, polish. We were the most racist bunch going but no one took offence to it as we knew it was just a joke and said in a non joking way. I can't even type things we use to call each other because id probably get banned.

Very true Bluesbrother, I strip back that comment.. :D

People in this day and age are so scared of using certain words and acting the wrong way that people dont know whether they are coming or going.

Its so funny to me to hear black mates calling a Middle Eastern mate we have "Desert Nigga" and hear black mates abuse each other with the N word in jest whilst if a white person on TV says it in jest and not in the derogatory way that some people would use it hatefully, pertaining to its original slavery roots. then the do-gooders go nuts!

Having dated quite a few black girls down the years I think I have been educated in some of the way that black people think and hopefully they have learned a bit from me and my Greek Cypriot side. The things that crack me up is that if a white only newspaper appeared it would be seen as a hateful paper but us Greeks in London can publish Greek papers for our community and Black folks can read The Voice which is a paper that consists of an all black team from reporters to editors and all the topics are black related!

I`ll continue to say what I want to the people that I know mean anything to me and I hope everyone else follows suit because we are becoming strangled by the PC police who dont know their arse from their elbow.
